School Items No child with physical defects can do himself, his parents or teachers just-ice and frequently will be a repeater. This becomes an added expense to his school and the State. Last year the Health Depart ment made a physical survey of the school children of Franklin County. Six thousand one hundred and fifteen children were examin ed. white 3.780, colored 2.333; with one or more defects 4.809 white 78.6 per cent defective, 1,833 colored or 78.5 per cent. The defects were as follows: White, Tonsils 1,200, teeth, 1,496. teeth need cleaning 866. over weight 187, under weight 1,240, pediculosis 90, skin 10, eyes 71. Colored. Tonsils 1,019, teeth 666, teeth need cleaning 466. over weight' 151, under weight 630. skin 11, eyes 86. A record of these defects was made and given to each grade teacher, requesting that same be transmitted to the parents. Teachers, if you did not notify parents you did noti do your duty. Parents, if you did not do all you could to have these defects correc ted you have failed in your dtuy to your children and cannot ex pect the best school work of them. Childran do not come into t'his world of their own volition. It is their inalienable right that they have every possible attention giv en them to bepom# strong men telly, morally and physically. Par ents apd teachers are responsible that they secure same. Parents and teachers are responsible that that they secure same. Parents of children of pre-gchool age are en tirely responsible for the proper training of them, but when child ren enter school, this responsibil ity is shared by the teachers. He was born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1871, the 'youngest of five children, and as ! they grew up Orville and one of his 'older brothers, Wilbur, became in separable. A highly respectable mid-western family, the father ,,was a bishop of the United Brethren church and later publisher of a re ligious newspaper; but the family never had a lot of money. Or j ville Wright started to make money 1 early in life, going about the neigh borhood and collecting old bones to ! sell to a fertilizing plant. When he was fourteen, he published a school ' paper with a toy printing press. Lat er he made a press of his own and Wilbur Improved it. Next he invent- 1 ed a paper folding machine for his father's print shop. He quit school ! in thp third year of high school and, ? with Wilbur, started a weekly news paper which lasted only three months. They then turned to Job printing and later started a bicycle repair shop. At about this time, they became interested in aviation and proceeded to construct the first heavier than air machine large enough to carry a man. As In their previous activi ties, Orville was the creative gen ius, Wilbur thC perfecter. Their first successful flight was at Kitty. Hawk, N. C., in 1903, and the suc cess of aviation was assured when Orville made a flight lasting 62 min utes and IS seconds, in 1908.
