SUGGESTION FOR IMPROVING QUALITY OF COTTON Farme>s in Franklin County can increase the sales prices of their cotton through improving the grade and staple length if careful consideration is given to several small items. The Cotton gin is a mechanical machine and does not have the ability to remove from the cotton completely dirt, hulls, leaf frag ments and moisture. Therefore, every effort should be taken by the farm operator in picking or having his cotton picked to prev ent dirt, hulls and leaf fragments from being mixed with the lint i cotton. I am advised that many farmers throughout Franklin County pick their cotton one af ternoon, leave It exposed to the dew that night and then carry it to the gin early the next morning. This practice causes the glnner to attempt to gin cotton too wet for the machinery to do a good Job. The ginning machine cannot sepa rate wet lint from the seed with out cutting the staple and caus ing the cotton to look spotted. This spotted condition places the cotton in a lower grade which will bring a smaller price. Cotton that is picked early morning while the dew is on the ground should be ' spread that the Sun may dry the dew off completely during the i day. It Is a safe practice in Frank ' lln County, as our gins are not equipped with dryers, to store cotton after it has been dried by the days Sun in,' a .cotton house .for several days depending upon moisture conditions that it may thoroughly dry before being ear 1 ried to gin. In storing this cotton attention should be given to care ful drying in the Sun of dew be ! fore it is stored in open room as thick layers of wet cotton when I stored may cause considerable I heat which will seriously effect the germination of seed and qual ity of fiber. The Centerville Community is cooperating this , year towards producing one variety cotton of long staple. Long staple cotton is harder to gin than short staple and is much harder to gin when wet, therefore, the farmer plant ing a good seed cannot expect to obtain his best grade and staple unless he furnishes his ginner with cotton in good ginning con dition. The market is offering good premiums for cotton of good staple and of high grade, there fore, it is greatly to yohr benefit that your cotton is properly pre pared for ginning at hotne before being carried to the gin. A rainy day is a bad day to > pick cotton and Is also a bad day I to gin cotton. ? - ? Many Franklin County grow ers report that as much as two -thirds of their cotton crop has been destroyed by heavy infesta tions of boll weevils, says Assis tant Farm Agent E. P. Barnes.
