McKinne, President f! ??i warn % , THE STARTING MONTH On The Farm and in The Home ^MdAcJt March brou(ht the itart of outdoor work And Bolivar went through the notions; While he >u not dlspoaed to shirk He yet had antiquated notions. And he accorded more reliance To signs and omens than to science. But Ma Pl|(, on (he other hand. Read Farm School bnlletins with sest And thus the came to understand The methods proved to be the best So she upset old fogy fancies And much improved the PiR finances. March, ushering in the first days o( spring, finds the North Carolina (arm family preparing for the new crop year. Here are timely reminders from specialists at State College that may be used to advantage during this traditionally windy month. Enos Blair, extension agrono mist, says if you haven't finished sowing Common. Tennessee 76, or Kobe lespedeza, be sure to complete the job at file beginning of March. If broadcast, sow 36 to 40 pounds of seed to the acre and cover with a section harrow. If a grain drill is used, 25 pounds : of seed will be sufficient. Pastures also may be seeded during March. Small grains sown lust fall should be top-dressed as early in March as possible. Those who like *.o plant corn early can do so durln? the last few days of this month with little fear of injury from j bud worms. H. W. Taylor, extension swino specialist, advises growers to pro vide a portable farrowing house 1 before the spring littsr of pigs ar i rives. Sows and pigs do better if ' plenty of green grazing is fur ! nished. Likewise, growers should build a self-feeder for their swine. Plans for the farrowing house and 'self-feeder may be obtained from I the county agent. John Arey. extension dairyman, points out that product-ion records of North Carolina cows under Dairy Herd Improvement Associa tion work compare favorably with those of old well-developed dairy states but that the Teed cost per 100 pounds of milk is twice as high as in some of Hie States. A shortage of good roughage, in cluding pasture. Is largely respon sible for this high cost. Dairymen should keep this in mind and make ample preparations for roughage in 1940. In planning for hay crops, it is a good idea, because of frequent dry summers, to use Beveral crops which mature at different periods. In the home garden. Lewis Watson, extension horticulturist', recommends that farm families make a second planting of beets and carrots during March. After I the middle of the month, sweet corn, snap beans, salsify, and par snips may be planted in the lower Coastal Plain area. Irish potatoes may he planted In the Upper Coas tal Plain and lower Piedmont dur (ing the month, Roy S. Dearstyne, head of the State College Poultry Department, says poultrymen may allow their chicks out-of-doors for a while each day as soon as the weather permits. In handling laying heiu, continue to cull out "boarders." This is a profitable practice since a bird consumes about seven pounds of feed a month. A. D. Stuart, seed specialist, says beware of all planting seed that you have not tested for ger mination. High quality seed Is one of the smallest items In the cost of producing a crop, and you can't go wrong on the rule of known origin, adapted seed of high qual ity. In four years of successful fi nancing of 4-H Club and Future Farmers projects, local produc tion credit associations have loan ed more than one and a half mil lion dollars.
