Cuti little cllngiug-vlne. button- 1

of avenging Lee's surrender by j ,
stealing beaux from Yankee rt- ^
vals.
But a tecluuo^l adviser em- g
poyed on a motion picture laid in L
the Old South today exposed what j ,
she called the "Southern accent j
racket." and told how any North- 1 ^
ern girl could Invoke, if necessary, j
the specious advantage of an ex- i
otic linguistic charm. At the same i
time the accent expert protested,
as a native Georgian, the assump
tion thatf a "get-your-mau" tech
nique of vine clinging and button
hole twisting is confined exclus- >
ively to the mockin' bird and s
magnolia country. , j '
The accent expert is Miss Susan li
Myrtck, of Macon, Georgia, em- j
ployed to teach Atlanta speech of i
75 years ago to the cast' of "(Jpne <
With the Wind."
"I don't think many Southern ji
girls realjy need to use an exag- s
gerated radio-vaudeville Southern
accent," said Miss Myrick loyally. I
"and I'm told plenty of button- i
holes are tiwlsted by girls who i
wouldn't know a magnolia from s
a cotton blossom. Just to demon
strate my low opinion of an accent i
as a beau catcher I'm willing to i
tell you here and now just how a :
girl can learn to talk Southern in "
one or two easy lessons. s
"First of . all. soften your Vs.' s
but don't do it broadly. Practiced
saying, 'I can't afford a four-door t
Ford.' and 'Barbara Barr admired 1
iur car."
"Speak with the lower Jaw re
axed, and remember that iu the
!outh oue doesn't hurry or worry i
?much. That will give you the '
anguid. leisurely diction that' dla
inguishes Southern speech. Ter- 1
ninal 'g's' should be suppressed.

Miss Myrick said there is a con
siderable variety of Southern ac
cents. and a person really ought
o know which one she is using." \
