w_ ahotdiLtN\fi amfodLr^t fCXTCNSION WORK J Several farmers in Franklin County has advised tihat the calcium arsenate purchased (or the purpose of mopping cotton which they did not use and in qnired regarding the advlsabj^ity of using obis material on tobacco for the control of tobacco insects. Calcium arsenate would kill in- ] sects, however, the material has greater burning powers than arsenate of lead and will serious ly injure the tobacco plant when used. Care should be taken not to use calcium arsenate as a sub stitute for arsenate of lead in ] controlling Insects. Cotton squares have formed and are of sufficient size in most fields to be punctured by boll weevils. Mopping of cotton is not recommended after squares have reached tihis stage as boll weevils eat in the squares instead of on the bud and mopping material will not cover the surface inside the square sufficiently to cause boll weevils to eat the poison. After squares have formed the | next stiep in boll weevil control is the picking up and the burning of squares until square count in dicates that 10% of squares are infested with boll weevil eggs. At this stage, dusting is the recom mended step. FARMERS MEETINGS The Tobacco Quota Provisions of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938 have been recently amended by Congress.
