Opening last week on Broad
way and soon to roadshow the
larger cities of the land was Walt
Disney's much heralded "Fantas
ia." Roughly speaking "Fantas
ia" is a two and one-halt hour
presentation of color illustrated
music. More important* than the
picture or the music is it's mode
of presentation. Utilizing the
most radical developments since
the birth of the sound motion pic
ture "Fantasa" literally sur
rounds t'he audience with music
and sound. Sitting in the theatre
a person hears a voice off-stage
and is amazed as the voice fol
lows the character on the screen
or off the screen as t'he illusion
may be. In one of the breath
taking scenes the voice of a solo
ist is heard faintly in the distance
coming from the right. As t'he
soloist moves to the center of the
screen so does the voice. As a
mixed chorus surrounds the sing
er the voices blend as the volume
increases and by virtue of loud
speakers arranged around the
back and sides of the theatre the
individual feels that he is sitting
in the center of t'he great chorus
of voices. "Fantasia" is primari
ly a motion picture in color peo
pled by Disney's fertile imagina
tion and with music recorded by
Leopold Stokowski and the Phil
adelphia Orchestra. The revolu
tionary sound system was develop
ed by Disney technicians and KCA
engineers who have carried out
research and experiments for sev
eral years in this new type of
sound. The special sound equip
ment for one theatre alone is said
to be worth $200,000 and there is I
only one set' in existence. There j
will be other sets of this sound i
available to Disney leased thea- j
tres in the near future RCA engi- 1
ueers said. The regular theatre!
sound system is not* employed ex
cept in an emergency breakdown
of the special equipment. This
special equipment has four separ
ate amplification channels and i
in a n y loudspeakers scattered {
throughout t'he theatre and all
over the back-stage area. The
"moving" sound is recorded on
tour sound tracks ? regular mov-|
ies have only oue sound track ? I
thus switching the sound from I
one set of speakers to another. j
The sound is recorded 011 a vepar- 1
ate film from the picture and isj
synchronized with the projector
electrically. A highly technical
part of Vhe system is a control
sound track that by light and elec
trical impulses controls the vol
ume In all the sets of loudspeak
ers. "Fantasia" and it-'s "Fanta
sound" is an eighth wonder of
the world and might well be the
motion picture industry's answer
to the threatened competition of
Television and nickel-in-the-slot
movies.

It is strange to note lliat
"Fantasia" was made possible
by Disney's infinitesimal giant,
that outstanding product of his
imagination, that roden, Mick
ey Mouse. It is a strange, yet
humorous, commentary on our
times that this revolutionary
development was brought
about, at least in part by a
mouse.

wild, sometimes lucky, shots at

are about one-half the size of the
average home-made backboards.

him to wait in the car while some
business was attended too. The
local man had left his luggage
and an overcoat with a wallet
, containing twenty dollars in the
car with the hitchiker. Return
ing. the ride-giver found the ov
ercoat and luggage intact but the
hitchiker and the wallet with the
| twenty dollars were gone.
