Questions
Answered at State College
yi'KSTION: When cows mid
calves giiun at fence posts ami
rails, wluit is the reason?
ANSWER: This hi a sign of
mineral deficiency in the rattan.
A sufficient quantity of calcium
is usually contained in legume
hays such as cowpea. soybean,
clover and alfalfa if these crops
are growu on soil not deficient in
lime. Where the grain ration
contains 30 per cent< of wheat
bran, cottonseed meal and soy
bean meul. there is usually a suf
ficient amount of phosphorous.
However, it will do no harm to
allow the cows and calves free
access to a mineral mixture com
posed of one part' salt and four
parts of steamed bone meal.
Ql'ESTIOX: How can corn
weevils be controlled'.'
ANSWER: The first step, says
J. O. Rowell, Extension entomol
ogist. is to thoroughly clean the
storage bin or crib and treat the
woodwork with any odorless,
tusteless. water-white petroleum
similar to that used in commer
cial fly sprays. Accumulations of
old grain and floor sweepings
from the previous crop should be
removed and burned. However,
if Mie sweepings are needed for
feed, they may be saved with
treatment by carbon disulphlde.
The sweepings should be placed
in a tight bin or barrel and the
cbemical poured over them at the
rate of three-fourths of a pint to
a barrel of sweepings.
QITOTION : Ik it necessary to
select a new site for the tobacco
plant bed ea-li year?
ANSWER: This is not abso
lutely necessary, but It is Hie
safest practice. Experimental evi
dence shows that disease and in
sect infestation can be materially
reduced by selecting a new plant
bed site each year, or by the ro
tation of plant bed sites. If the
old site is used, it should be
