Observations
; By W. K. NHKI/TON
The sudden
and tragic
death last Sat
urday night of
W. Frank May
u g a i 11 offers
mute testimony
to some one's
car elessneBS.
Whether it was \
May's careless- j
ness or tihe hit- I
and-run driv- I
er's thoueht
lcssness that caused the accident
we do not know. We do know
that the person who struck him
would be much better off it he
bad stopped and reported the ac
cident then and there. We re
member Judge Hunt Parker's
stinging rebuke of Sam Cannon
in the last criminal court and the
heavy sentence given Sam Cannon
for hit-and-run driving. Luckily,
there was no one killed in Can
non's accident but it does serve to
show the lack of mercy court's
have for a hit-and-run driver. Lo
c?l officers and highway patrol
men are even now investigating
several clues as to the identity of
the hit-and-runner. If t-hey run up
against a blank wall, which isn't
likely, the SB1 modern crime de
tection laboratory is at their dis
posal. This laboratory has done
some amazing things by building
convicting evidence out of little
things like a bit of glass or a par
ticle of mud. Arrest, for the
driver of that car, is certain. In
l he near future if not now. When
that driver is arrested he will be
in" trouble and I mean serious
trouble. There is only one course
left H> that person. He should give
himself up here and now with a
plea for mercy that would be
heard. Perhaps this hit-and-run
driver would like to drop by May's
home on Christmas day and see
his widow and child mourning for
their husband and father. If the
driver of t'hat car has a conscience
he will provide something for
May's small family and face trial
for the accident. Investigation
may show the accident as un
avoidable. In that case only the
.it- and, -run charge would remain.

l.nrd Haw Haw, the renegade
Kngl isltniaii, commentator for
thi' Berlin radio was his usual
nasty self on tlie lirraian short
waves Sunday night. Among
oilier cutting remarks aimed at
tlie Knglisli and I'nitcd States
governments. Haw Haw remar
ked that American aid (o liri

said further. "No one can blame
tlx- United States for trading
5(1 decrepit over-age destroyers
for valuable foothold** on the
colonial possessions of (he Hrit- ;
ish Empire." Hun Haw inti
mated that the purpose of the
trade wus llie intention of the
United States to eventually
sei/.e ull British colonial posses
sions in this hemisphere. How
utterly misguided the tiernaan
propaganda bureau must be to
allow their cominentutor to '
make such false statements and
leave such erroneous impres
sions. Perhaps they are judging
our ambitions by. the standards
of theirs.

Had a look last week at a pre
v'ue of "The Thief of Bagdad" in :
which Rex Ingram has a starring (
role. The color is magnificently
beautiful. The camera tricks are j
marvels to behold. Hex Ingrain
plays the part of rtie Genii and
his many appearances as a figure
85 feet high from the smoke of
the magic lamp is indeed awe in
spiring. If we are any judge of
entertainment then the "Thief of
Bagdad" will be a definite hit.

MILKY U . HOliMKS
May I say just' a little regard
ing my old friend Mr. Wiley
Holmes as most people knew
him. Uncle Wiley, recently de
ceased. Dying in his ?01h year
he was doubtless at the time of
his death the oldest citizen of our
town or immediate community.
There were two outstanding char
acteristics of his life well known
to all who knew him at all well -
one his unflagging industry ex
tending through all his affective
years even down to old age when
the flight of time and bodily in
tirmity had stiffened his joints
and impeded hiB locomotion. Ha
was the pioneer trucker around
Louisburg in the day when there
were no green grocers here ? nofc
one. Each home owner had his
own garden and raised his own
corn, peas, both garden and field,
potatoes, cymliugs. not squash,
cucumbers, etc., but no carrots or
spinach, these contributors to
growt'h and health not having yet
appeared at least here. Uncle
Wiley began to raise vegetables
and plants of all sorts for trans
planting and by persistence and
industry built up a good business
and prospered. Older cIMxens of
Louisburg will remember him
j most distinctly as such I well
'remember while a guest at tfie
College during my father's incum
bency there 40 years ago hearing
his singing voice us he came down
itlie hill South of the river in l<he
early ii)orn clearly announcing
his wares for the day. He was
.equally well known and as well
j remembered Tor liis devotion to
! the church and regular attend
iance there whenever he could.
No pastor of the Methodist Church
in or around Louisburg for the
Jpasl 60 years, or Presiding Elder
jor visiting brother can well for
jget him ? his regular attendance.
| his manifest interest in all fchat
| was said or done, his hearty amen
whenever in song or prayer or
i sermon anything was said that
| especially appealed to him. These
are just a few of the many good
things t-hat might be said about
this old brother whose once fa
miliar figure will no longer be
jseen on our streets, or in our
churches. Uncle Wiley was thrice
I married ? his first wife the moth
ler of his children being a Griflin.
; sister to Mr. Howell Griffin, one
j of Franklin County's prosperous
farmers 60 vears ago.
