Background Of
Roger W. Babson
American business has no more
inspiring personality t-han Roger
W. Babson, internationally-knowTf
business commentator and invest
ment adviser. An outstanding
feature of his philosophy has been
his lifelong insistence on t'he im
portance of religion in business.
Born in 1815, reared in an old
fashioned atmosphere of hard
work and hustle on a farm in
tJloucester, Mr. Babson went to
The Massachusetts Institute of
?Technology. Upon graduating in
J 898. he turned instinctively to
financial and hupfoess activities.
His exertions, however, under
lined his healt>h; he contracted
tuberculosis and he was sent
West "as good us dead"! It was
while he 'was convalescing from
this dread malady that he worked
out some of the possibilities and
problems of business statistics.
That was nearly thirty-five
years ago. Today his weekly stat
istical and financial reports are
. ead by thousands of business
men and his research work is
carried on by a large staff of
workers.
Mr. Babson founded Babson
Instil'Ute for men; and. in coop
eration with Mrs. Babson. devel
oped Webber College for women,
?-both nationally-known educa
tional institutions. Here young
men and women may conceutrate
more in t'he fundamentals and less
on the frills of business.
To millions of newspaper rea
ders. Mr. Babson Is best known
by his familiar weekly stories on
business which appear in more
than 4 FiO papers throughout
North America. Of unbounded
energy. Koger W. Babson has
probably done more, than any oth
er man to bring statistics to life,
to instill a broader vision in busi
nessmen, and to publicize the ups
nd-downs of the business cycle.
