six years t-he State College Exten
sion Service has organized and
directed Soil Conservation Asso
ciations which operate heavy
equipment to terrace land and
control equipment. Farmers who
terrace their land earn soil-build
ing payment** through the AAA
program. Thus, while the sol
diers operating the tank are prac
ticing Maneuvers which strength
en the Nation's armed defense.
Tar Heel farmers are carrying on
soil defense work by terracing
more than 70.000 acres of land
every year.
