Prominent Local Ranker Observes 80th Birthday J. Bailey Owen, One of Hen derson's Oldest Citizens; Portrait Hung in Citizens Bank John Bailey Owen, one of the founders and first cashier of the Citizens Bank & Trust Company, of Henderson, observed his eigh tieth birthday Sunday, March 21. as a patient' in Maria Parham hos pital, where he has been under treatment for a week. Plans made for appropriate observance of his anniversary at the bank to day had to be called off because of his illsess. But a large lifesize oil painting of Mr. Owen was placed in the bank opposite the front lobby, and many friends and others not ed it during the day* and made favorable comment on the pic ture and recalled the long service of Mr. Owen to, the city and many of its institutions. The portrait was painted by Mrs. Marie Bur t well Hunt, of Oxford, and was provided by the bank. Mr. Owen was born March 21, 1863. in Halifax county. Virginia. His father was one of the out standing men of Southside Vir ginia. Mr. Owen came to Hen derson in January. 1889. as one of the organizers of the Citizens Bank, which began business Jan uary 21. 1889. and has been in continuous operation since that time. When the bank opened, Mr. Owen was its first cashier, a con nection he held for a number of years. Later he was elected president, on February 1, 1895./ and holds that office today and has continuously since he was first head of the bank, except for two or three years recently, when he was chairman of the board. Although in rather feeble health^or the last several years, Mr. Owen has been able most of the time to go to the bank for several hours each business day. and has found great pleasure in greeting friends and renewing acquaintances. He has always maintained a keen interest in lo cal. national and world affairs. Mr. Owen has been for years treasurer of the Henderson and Harriet Cotton Mills corporation here. He was first treasurer of the Henderson public schools and was instrumental in their estab lishment more than forty years ago. About twenty years ago he was grand master for a term of the North Carolina Grand Lodge of Masons and has served ?for many years as a trustee of the Oxford " Orphanage, which has claimed miieii of his interest. He has been a lifelong Democrat, and frequent contributor to its cam paigns. 31 r. <jwen nas oeen a neavy con tributor to many charitable en terprises of the community, and to the First Presbyterian church, of which he has been a member during his residence in Hender son. For fifty-four years, during its entire existence. Mr. Owen has been connected officially with the Citizens Bank & Trust Company, and has seen it grow from a small rural institution to its present stature as the "leading bank in this section." with resources well in excess of seven million dollars. Mr. Owen is one of Hender son's first citizens, is known to and held in high esteem and af fection by thousands of acquain tances throughout the section, as well as elsewhere in North Caro lnia. ? Holmes, who is with the armed forces in North Africa. The letter was written on March 6th. and was received here btt the 22nd; The letter follows: Dear Dad: Well how is everything on the farm.
