KRKP 'KM SMOKING
Erie, Pa, July 12. ? A year ago
two employees of the General
Electric plant here conceived the
idea of asking war workers in
the shops to drop a penny a week
into containers distributed about
the buildings to provide a fund
with which to send cigarettes to
the boys in service. That the
idea was a success is best sub
stantiated by a report this week
that more than one million pen
nies, over $1 0,000, have been
donated to the "keep 'em smok
ing" fund. 1
These two workers are Ray
Grappy and Carl Rumberger.
Both have been with General
j Electric about two years. The
, first week the collections totalled
$70. The second week they
reached $100 and gradually clim
bed until a record was estab
' lished in February of this year
when collections amounted to
$307.07.
Cigarettes are sent to all Erie
boys in service.
Due to the shortage of feeds,
growers should fully utilize tem
porary pastures of soybeans, les
pedeza, millet and similar crops
in- growing out their late spring
pigs.
Mrs. Mattie Midgett, who form
erly operated a grocery store and
filling station at Nags Head in
Dare County, has turned to
gardening, poultry, and pigs. She
has saved 24 out of 25 poults at
i six weeks of age.
