Praffklinton. in tlie Copeland Perry neighborhood sol ves the problem of watermelons dying in this section of the coun ty. Four resistant varieties of seed were furnished toy H. R. Garriss, Extension Plant Pathologist, State College Station, Kaleigh, to plant in a wilt infested plot. One hun dred and fifty-two hills of the resistant varieties were planted along with the same number of hills of the regular variety usual ly planted. One hundred and fifty hills of the resistant varie ties lived and produced, while one hundred and thirteen hills of the regular varity died with wilt. The watermelons produced had fine quality as to taste and flav or. The larger ones ranges from 35 to 40 pounds despite the ter ribly dry weather conditions. Tharrington, of Route 3, Louisburg, N. C. has completed his course of studies as an aviation mechanic in this school of the Army Air Forces Technical Training Command. His graduation from this tech nical school now fits him for air plane maintenance and he will be sent t6 some air base where he will assist in keeping- America'!)
