TIMELY FARM QUESTIONS QUESTION: When is the best time to apply potash to peanut*'.' ANSWER: Experiment Station tests by State College research men show that 100 pounds of muriate of potash .per acre ap plied to cotton preceding peanuts gives Increased yields of cotton and also serves for the peanut crop which follows. Potash ap plied directly to peanuts has de creased the stand and yield. These tests, conducted at five lo cations, show the importance of adjusting the fertility program to take into consideration the! fertility requirements of all crops in the rotation. 11? Tl QUESTION : Does it puy to fer tilize serlcea lespedeza? ANSWER: Tests on a Cecil loam soil at the Piedmont Branch Station at Statesville have shown an average yield of 1.56 tons of hay without fertilizer and 2.04 tons with 50 pounds of super phosphate per acre. Where 2 tons of lime per acre were applied pre vious to seeding, the yield was 1.90 tons and with both lime and superphosphate 2.33 tons per acre. II? If . . QUESTION : Why are so many farmers getting all excited about lespedeza and what is the best variety for me to grow? ANSWER: It is a most excel lent hay and grazing crop, say State College agronomists. They also point out that it is a fine soil improving crop and helps to prevent erosion. Thirty years ago it was practically unknown in North Carolina, except as a wild plant. Today Kobe and Korean are the leading commercial va rieties. Consult your county agent as to seed supplies and the variety best suited to your con ditions. Lespedeza fits well into crop rotation in all parts of the State and the acreage is being continually increased. Soil tests will tell you how much lime ' is needed for successful production of the crop. Complete fertilizers are needed in the rotation, where the crop is grown for several years. o FOR RENT A good two-horse farm with 5.5 acres tobacco and adapted to all crops, for rent for 1944 on shares.
