Parrish, of Castalla, Route 1 will assist Soil Conserva tion Service Technicians in estab lishing such soil conserving prac tices as meadow strips, terraces, wildlife borders, pastures, -kudzu ; and sericea lespedeza, crop rota tions, winter cover crops, fish ponds, and woodland management on the farms in his community. A plan is now underway whereby a local man in each of the ten, townships of the County can be employed on a daily basis by the Soil Conservation Service to work with the fartners in his commun ity in establishing soil conserving practices. ANSWER: Now is just the time, because the major market ing season is coming soon. Too often the selection of birds for breeding is postponed until the last minute and, as a result, many birds that should be kept as breeders find their way to market. Selection of toms- Is Important be cause the torn has a much greatei influence than the hen in th? flock. Selected toms should be well developed, free from pin feathers, and reasonably fat. Birds with extremely long or short shanks should not be saved as breeders. Bird's with such ab normalities as crooked breasts should go to market. ANSWER: Under most condi tions, the answer is yes. Follow ing such heavily fertilized crops as tobacco and cotton, fertilizer at planting does not usually give a response, according to Exten sion specialists. They suggest 300 pounds of 4-10-6 or 4-8-8 per acre in the Coastal Plain, or a like amount of 0-12-12 on fer tile soils or where legumes have been turned under. In the Pied mont or Mountain sections, he suggests 300 pounds of 4-12-4 or 3-12-6, or a like amount of 0-14-7 on fertile soils or following le gjumes turned under. n? 1 n QUESTION: I am a backyard poultryman.
