Figures recently released by
a national drug auditing service
show that millions of Ameri
cans are now using tranquil
Uing drugs.
These tranqulllxlng drugs,
specifically the phenothiazines,
are very valuable drugs, but
unfortunately they can cause a
wide variety of detrimental side
effects. Some of ihe side re
actions that have occurred may
range from mild jutters and
anxiety to grotesque body con
tortions and even to the extreme
rigidity found in Parkinson's
disease.
Medical studies over the past
few years have shown that the
tranquilizers can cause a wide
variety of "dtdconc.rtlng, oc
casionally ilarnflng" distur
bances- -one study iti particu
lar covering some 4 thousand
patients including psychiatric
problems and children and
pregnant women who were given
the dru ' for' control of nausea.
This study further showed that
the Incidence of side reactions,
and the age at which these
various neurologic reactions
occur are not dependent on the
amount of the drug taken or on
the period of time that the indi
vidual has been under 'treat
ment.
Since s<> many Americans arc
on these drills it is important
for all to he aware of possible
reactions- -because many are
buying these valuable, but po
tentially dangerous, drugs with
out a prescription or are under
medical supervision. Also, all
patients on tranquilizers will be
glad to know that should a re
action occur, a new drug has
been developed-- a drug for
treating patients with Park
inson's disease-- that effec
tively controls undesirable side
effect.
Much has been written In the
lay press and many citizens
have become overly anxious
about radiation exposure; this
would c ertainly seem to liea
natural consequence of the a
toinic age in which we live.
Many have been alarmed to the
extent that they have refused the
routine chest X-ray surveys of
adults entering hospitals.
The admission survey film Is
rm>st valuable 'artd should not
be refused by adults. This is
not true in children, the survey
film being taken on children
only if the tuberculin skin test

Medical Bill Passed
Washington, D. C.? Congress
has sent lo the White House
the first major Administration
bill to lx* cleared this sejsion?
president Kennedy's medical
education program.
The Senate approved the
$236,400,000 medical bill by an
overwhelming 71-9 vote. The
House approved It in April,
288-122.
Kives a positive reading.
The value of the routine sur
vey films on adults admitted
to hospitals is shown bv the
following statistics: an average
of 3.5 active TB cases In every
1,000 patients Is reported; also,
another 4.5 suspected TB cases
per 1,000 are found with non
tubercular chest abnormalities.
The repeated exposure of the
body to various X-ray exami
nations naturally increases the
danger- -but all hospitals, pri
vate or public, preoerly staf
fed, take the necessary pre
cautions In shielding the various
parts of the body not being ex
amined. ?_
Today's Film Revue
The Leopard
The story (or this film comes
from Giuseppe di Lampedusa's
noval "The Leopard." Shown
In color, the film's mood Is one
of melancholy and nostalgia as It
follows the life of a noble Si
cilian family in the mid
19th century.
The tempo of the story moves
.slowly, lr keeping withthlsera,
giving mjch time to the beauti
ful and colorful scenes from this
large Island to the Mediterran
ean.
F althful to the historical anc
le, the early scenes cover Gari
baldi's conquest of Sicily. The
plot Is based on the Prince's
choice for a wife ? and the
family doubts and slowness to
accept this marriage to a girl
of the bourgeolse who Is beau
tiful and wealthy.
To get a true picture of the
j, tjickGTtund and purpose one has
to remember his history and the
life of this period.
Burt Lancaster, as "The
Leopard, " creates his best
Image In his sarcastic bursts
of anger. Claudia Cardlnale,
portraying the bourgeoise girl
is convincing as the gypsy girl
in earlier scenes and later the
well dressed lady she is to be
come.

On Aid Cuts
! Washington, D. C.? President
Kennedy recently told Ameri
can businessmen that *' disas
trous cuts by the House In for
eign aid funds would damage
the country's export trade as
well as Its security.
In the speech prepared for
400 executives at the White
House Conference on Export
Expansion. Kennedy devoted
a third of his address to what
he called "our much abused
foreign aid program."
Confident About
Treaty
Washington, D. C.? President
Kennedy has expressed con
fidence that the Senate will ra
tify the limited nuclear test ban
treaty "by a margin large
enough to show the world that
the American people want a
just peace."
Kennedy said the pact "Is
the first concrete limitation on
the nuclear arms race since
the bomb was first invented."
It's never too late, If you are
still alive, to be careful on
the highway.
