Doctor Talk By.John B. Rembert, M.D. Figures recently released by a national drug auditing service show that millions of Ameri cans are now using tranquil Uing drugs. These tranqulllxlng drugs, specifically the phenothiazines, are very valuable drugs, but unfortunately they can cause a wide variety of detrimental side effects. Some of ihe side re actions that have occurred may range from mild jutters and anxiety to grotesque body con tortions and even to the extreme rigidity found in Parkinson's disease. Medical studies over the past few years have shown that the tranquilizers can cause a wide variety of "dtdconc.rtlng, oc casionally ilarnflng" distur bances- -one study iti particu lar covering some 4 thousand patients including psychiatric problems and children and pregnant women who were given the dru ' for' control of nausea. This study further showed that the Incidence of side reactions, and the age at which these various neurologic reactions occur are not dependent on the amount of the drug taken or on the period of time that the indi vidual has been under 'treat ment. Since s<> many Americans arc on these drills it is important for all to he aware of possible reactions- -because many are buying these valuable, but po tentially dangerous, drugs with out a prescription or are under medical supervision. Also, all patients on tranquilizers will be glad to know that should a re action occur, a new drug has been developed-- a drug for treating patients with Park inson's disease-- that effec tively controls undesirable side effect. Much has been written In the lay press and many citizens have become overly anxious about radiation exposure; this would c ertainly seem to liea natural consequence of the a toinic age in which we live. Many have been alarmed to the extent that they have refused the routine chest X-ray surveys of adults entering hospitals. The admission survey film Is rm>st valuable 'artd should not be refused by adults. This is not true in children, the survey film being taken on children only if the tuberculin skin test A DO-IT-YOURSELF PAINTER'S DREAM SUPER KEM-TONE AMERICAS FAVORITE WALL PAINT Reg. $6.49 Gallon SPECIAL AT 4.59 gal.
