York, today. Gov ernor Sanford has designated the week of May 3-9 as the 1964 "week for special em phasils on the needs of aged persons in the State. The date coincides with the national observance of the month of May, which has been designated by President Johnson as National Senior Citi zens Month. Services available for older persons in. this county through public welfare include money grants to needy people who meet eligibility requirements under law. In addition there are many non-financial ser vices available to needy aged persons, stated County Wel fare Director, Jane M. York. "There has been a great in crease in aged population of our State in the last decade," pointed out Mrs. York. "In North Carolina today there are approximately 344,000 persons 65 years of age or older. In Franklin County there are ap proximately 2225 persons 65 years of age or older." Hospitalization for this group of older citizens is available where needed from a statewide pooled fund. Approximately 30 were hospitalized from this fund In March.
