Baker Switches
For Rebel 300
Darlington, S. C.--The latest i
car-switch among race drivers,
taking Buck Baker out of a Lee
Petty Plymouth and into Junior
Johnson's vacated Ray Fox
Dodge, could well be the most
important driver change of all
before the May 9 Rebel 300.
^ With both Chrysler and Ford
amps openly bidding for driv
er talent before the third clas
sic race of the season, the Rebel
300, Dodge scored the heaviest
of all in landing the master of
the brutal Darlington mile and
three-eighths.
Baker leads all drivers in
competition miles at Darling
ton, -having amassed a total of
. 7, 54 miles in fourteen years
< of Southern 500's and Rebel
300's. The South Carolina na
tive has won the 500 twice,
1953 and I960, . with eight
other finishes from second to
tenth position.
With master-mechanic Fox
now behind him, the old pro
is mounted with the best equip
ment and stable he has ever
had for the Confederate Me
morial Day classic.
Fox automobiles, with driv
ers Dave Pearson and Junior
Johnson, have won the three
major stock car speedways with
only Darlington eluding him.
A Chrysler spokesman would
not deny the fact theic products
have been scarce at the smaller
Grand National races as a part
of their preparation for the
important Rebel 300. ? We!
feel we have our best chance in !
the 300 and we're hanging it j
all out for that'one," he said, j
Baker's entry now brings the j
signed Rebel 300 field to 38 1
t ars, six over the starting lim
it. Ford leads the list with
14 of the entrants. Plymouth
has seven, Jtlercury six, Dodge
five with Chrysler, Pohtiac and
Chevrolet two each.
Inspection and practice will !
start Monday with the first of t
three days of time trials sche
duled for Wednesday. At least
half of the field are expected
to try for the first eight, start
ing positions, awarded Wed
nesday.

Some men never outgrow the need
for a wagon
A wagon has a way with men Always has. Always
will Especially when it's a Dodge Wagon. Case in
point that Polara shown above. As rugged and hand
some a carryall as you've ever laid hands on.
Inside? saddle grained vioyl that resists cracking,
scuffing, shrinking, stretching. Hand fitted carpeting
on the floor. A center armrest in front that snaps
down solidly under your arm.
And there's room. Big, open room you can cram
to the roof .L Seating for six or nine passengers. And
underhood? a choice of engines ranging from a frisky
Six to an optional, ripsnortin' 426 cubic inch V8.
It's a tough combination to beat.
Look 'em over at your Dodge Dealer's. The wagons
that have a way with men? Dodge Wagons. Man
sized. Man powered. Eight versions to pick from.
(And you might as well bring along your better half.
Seems the gals prefer the big, strong, silent type, too. )
