Youngsville Lads Become Eagle Scouts Youngsvllle-- For the first time In the history of Youngs ?Ule Boy Scouting, three boys have achieved the valued Scouting Rank of EagleScouts. A recognition ceremony was held at the Youngsvllle Bap tist church during the morn ing worship hour on Sunday Feb. 12. This followed a spec-, lal message by church minis ter L. J. Phillips. ' It takes approximately three years for a Boy Scout to meet the qualifications for Eagle Rank. It was during the past month that the three local boys finally reached their goal and passed the Eagle Board of Review held at the scout office In Raleigh. The scouts are Rodney Roberts, aged 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Marvin Roberts; Glenn Evans, aged 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Rudy Evans; Jimmy Moss, aged 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Moss. To achieve Eagle status a scout must have completed six ranks, carrying out Commun ity Service Projects and Con servations projects. He must have held office In the troop and demonstrated leadership ability. He has to complete twenty one Merit Badges, eleven of these required and ten elective. Required In cludes Cooking, Camping, First Aid, Swimming, Life Saving, Two Citizenships, Soli and Water, Nature, Safety, and Personal Fitness. There are over 120 interesting electlves from which to choose. Scoutmaster for Troop 588 Is N. A Brown whohasbeenwlth the troop since It was organ ized In Youfagsvllle In 1943. W. R. Evans Is Assistant Scoutmaster In Charge of Ad vancement. About fifteen qua lified men and teachers In the community are serving as Merit Badge Counselors, working with the scouts on specific projects as guides, advisor, demonstrators, and helpers. When rank has been earned, Counselors and Scout officials sign the badge appli cations. There are other scouts In the troop current ly working towards the Eagle Rank. At the church cere mony Scout Field Director of the Occoneechee Council Mr. John Eagle Scouts -? Evans, Roberts , Moss Bush conducted the service. Saponl District Executive Lin Finch was also In attendance. Parents of the three honored scouts were commended tor their support and mothers were asked to pin the Eagle Badges on the boys. In turn the scouts presented Eagle pins to their mothers. In attendance (or the service were the uniformed members of Troop 588, the leaders, friends and relatives. Also present were members of the Cub Scout Pack, Cubmaster Mack DeMent and Asst. Cub master J. T. Young. . Den mothers for the pack are Mrs. D. H. Cyrus, Jr. of Den One; Thanks I would like to take this opportunity to thank my many friends, for the prayers, flow ers, cards and visits, while a patient at Franklin Memorial Hospital. Long (D., La.) says the cost of the Vietnam war may produce a $20-billion deficit In the next fiscal year unless the Presi dent Increases taxes or cuts non-defense spending. On Missiles The Johnson Administration will present to Congress plans to move ahead with Initial measures to offset Soviet De ployment of a new missile defense system. Secretary of State Dean Rusk said the two powers are on the verge of a new and costly phase In the nuclear arms race. Sports aren't everything but they provide good competitive training for boys and girls. Week the local troop members held a re-dedlcatlon ceremony to the Scout Oath and Law at 8:15 a. m. at the Youngsvllle High School on Wednesday. On Saturday they had planned to set up a camp site up town. However, this had to be can celled because of the snow. A highlight of the Cub Scouts observance of scout week was a window display up town re flecting various troop activi ties. Leaders are planning a Blue and Gold Banquet for February 27th. Mrs." Coltrane, a native of Asheboro, will deal mainly with the Inner-City Ministry of Raleigh, a project designed to help some of the people classified as poverty-strick en, meaning that a family of four lives on )3,000 or less per year. A graduate of Elon College and N. C. State Uni versity, she has been active across the years In civic, club and church work. The mother of two children, she was also quite active In school affairs for several years. Since her children have completed school, she has centered her work around civic and church affairs. She Is at present chairman of the Commission on Social Concerns of the Edenton Street Methodist Church. She has been hon ored on several occasions for her distinguished services. Mr. Stipes, a native of South Carolina, Is on the staff of the Migrant Ministry Pro ject of the North Carolina Council of Churches. He has been with this project since r It was started by the Council of Churches In 1965. He Is married to the former Audrey Williams of Raleigh. His remarks will deal with the work of the Council of Chur ches to the vast numbers of migrants that travel through and work In North Carolina each year.'
