The 180th Anniversary Ball at Louisburg College
last Thursday night may well have been the town's most
elegant social event in years. One in a number of
special events celebrating the 180th year, the Duke
Student Union became a ballroom of rare beauty and
style for the 200 guests dancing to the music of the
Glenn Miller Orchestra directed by Buddy deFranco.
The black tie affair was hosted by President and
Mrs. Cecil W. Robbins, who greeted guests in the re
ceiving line with the Chairman of the Board of Trustees,
Dr. James E. Hillman and his wife, and Dean of the
College, Mr. John B. York and his wife.
Greeting guests at the door were Captain and Mrs.
James H. Brown. Mrs. Brown was stunning in a Charles
Wienberg ice blue crepe gown with floral trim of rhine
stones and a white fox stole. Miss Sarah Foster, lovely
in a flowing white gown graciously introduced guests to
the receiving line.
Mrs. Robbins, elegantly gowned in white bpocade,
Mrs. Hillman, lovely in a blue lace and chiffon dress,
and Mrs. York wearing delicate misty chiffon presented
a vision of beauty to the guests as they arrived.
Among the out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. R. W.
Ayscue of Henderson; Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Dail of Gar
ner; Mr. and Mrs. John L. Honeycutt of Henderson; Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Safrit of Gamer; Mr. and Mrs. James P.
Swindell of Cary; Mr. and Mrs. Jay Thompson of Tren
ton; and Mr. and Mrs. M. (J. Tuttle of Raleigh.

Mrs. Alma Ellis and Mrs. Helen Stephenson served
from a lace covered refreshment table decorated with a
massive arrangement of blue Iris and white Chrysanthe
mums. Junior hostesses were Missess Bonnie Turnage,
Fay Horton, Linda Rogers, and Susan Simmons.
Most of the guests remained to the last of the gala
occasion and some were heard to remark that a formal
ball should become an annual tradition.
