Or. Bowen was born and raised in Franklin County, N.C., near Bunn. He Is the sbn of Mr. aixr Mr s ."SEatle Lee Bqwen, who now reside in Athens, Ga. Dr. Bowen, associate pro fessor of geology, spoke to the conference on "Parame ters Controlling Offshore Concentrations of Non-Me tallic Mineral Deposits." His address was delivered to nearly 2,000 oceanograph ers, engineers, geologist and other scientists from almost 20 countries, all concerned with exploration for minerals In the seas and oceans. The conference marked the first time that such a meeting has been held In the Gulf Coast area. The group usually holds its meetings on the West Coast. Dr. Bowen stressed the im portance of studying the his tory of shallower oceanic re gions! "as they were alter natedly exposed to erosion and covered by the sea during the several glacial and ln terglaclal times of recent Ic? Ages." A member of the USM fac ulty since 1964, Dr. Bowen has been actively engaged In research projects covering a wide range of geologic sub jects. He ha* presented sev eral papers at such widely separated sites as Washing ton, D.C.; Buenos Aires; Mon tevideo; and Tallahassee, Fla. In April he will participate In the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Advanced Study Institute on "Paleogeo physlcs", to be held at the University of Newcastle upon-Tyne, England, present ing two papers there.
