Director ; Education Division N. C. Department of Mental Health Are You Open-Minded Dur ing A Political Campaign? Chances are you aren't, science tells us. You probably think that you look at all sides of a political question before you vote but it's quite likely you don't. Probably you expose your self only to ttiose communi cations that are in line with opinions you already have. You don't want your opin ions to be changed. So you stay away from any in fluences that modify (hem in any significant degree. How many of you Demo crats read about Republicans in the papers, or listen to them on the radio, or watch them on television? And the same question for you die-hard Republican voters. Do you give the Dem ocratic politicians any real chance to influence you toward their point of view? Even when people of one persuasion "tune in" on the opposite point of view they tend to hold fast to their biases. They twist what the speaker or the newspaper artl cle says to fit their existing attitudes. In other words, we tend to hear what we want to hear and see what we want to see. Also, we tend to forget much more quickly any of the opposite points of view that may have seeped into our thinking, and to retain new material that is in line with our sympathies. Check me during the next political campaign. How does this all apply to your mental health? Well, in many ays. but I'll just em phasize this one point now: whenever we hear something new or read something (as in this column, for example) that may apply to our mental health practices, we may toss it aside with, "Oh that doesn't concern me." Or, "That's not important!" Well, please, do give ideas a chance. Who knows, after some thought you may find a given idea does apply to you or your children or your com munity. The mentally healthy person is a thinking indivi dual. He can empathize with others. He understands him self. He is open to new ideas. You?
