Veterans To Receive Dividends
M<>re than 4.250.000
World War 1 and World War II
veterans holding GI insurance
policies will receive S236 mil
lion in dividends during 1969.
W. R. Phillips. Manager of the
Winston-Salem Veterans Ad
ministration Regional Office,
announced today.
This is $13 million more
than the 1968 dividend pay
ment of S223 million.
The dividends will be paid
throughout 1969 on the anni
versary dates of the policies.
Phillips said.
He emphasized that vete
rans need not apply for the
dividends since payments will
be made automatically.
For nearly 4,100.000
World War II veterans.
National Service Life In
surance (NSLI) 1969 divi
dends will total $218 million.
The average payment will be
about $53. NSLI dividends in
1968 were $208 million.
Some 185.000 World War
I veterans with United States
Government Life Insurance
(USGLI) policies will receive
a 1969 dividend of $18 mil
lion. The 1968 dividend
amounted to $15 million.
Average payment in 1969 will
be approximately $97, up
$18 over the 1968 average of
$79.
Increased interest earnings
on government life insurance
funds made possible the
higher 1969 dividends.
These earnings will also
enable VA to pay a modest,
first-time dividend averaging
$11 to approximately
193.000 veterans holding
modified life insurance poli

Army And Bases
It appears the army is
ready to begin scaling down
its large training bases in the
U.S. as the American buildup
in Vietnam nears the
549,500-man ceiling. The
Pentagon says no decision has
been reached, but admits con
sidering cutbacks.
Most vacationists have
now gotten over their vaca
tions and are beginning to get
down to work again.

These policies are issued at a
low permanent plan premium
rate and provide maximum
insurance protection until the
veteran reaches age 65. Then
the face value of the polity is
halved.
Sales Of Guns
Greensboro. N. C. - Sales
of guns and ammunition will
be controlled under the new
Federal gun law which takes
effect December 16.
J. E. Wall, District Di
rector of Internal Revenue
for North Carolina, said IRS
is preparing material to help
gun dealers, gun buyers and
collectors comply with he
new Gun Control Act of
1968 which was enacted by
Congress in October.
Mr. Wall said the new law
should not place any un
reasonable restrictions on the
purchase or ownership of
ordinary guns used for hunt
ing. target shooting or other
lawful purposes.
Persons under 21 will be
prohibited from purchasing
pistols, revolvers, and ammu
nition for such weapons and
persons under 18 will not be
permitted to purchase any
firearms or ammunition.
Sales will generally not be
permitted to out-of-state resi
dents. Mr. Wall said, although
a person from an adjoining
state can buy a rifle or shot
gun by complying with cer
tain provisions of the new
Act. Sales to residents of a
state will be prohibited if
possession of the firearm is
not allowed by local or
dinance.
Summaries of pertinent
local laws are being compiled
in a booklet to be mailed by
IRS to Federally licensed gun
dealers. The booklet. Publica
tion 603, "Published P* Fi
nances-Firearms," should be
in the hands of dealers before
December 16, to enable them
to check on the gun laws of a
locality before selling a gun.
Early Discharges
The Pentagon recently an
nounced the armed forces
will discharge some service
men so they can be home for
Christmas. Servicemen who
would normally be discharged
between mid-December and
early January will be released
earlier so they can arrive
home for Christmas.
