FVW Head Start Set For Full Year - Participates in National Lan guage Development Experi ment ? Columbia, South Carolina ? The Franklin-Vance-Warren Full Year Head Start Program is one of 6 centers across the nation participating in an ex perimental language develop ment program. The research, directed by the University of South Carolina ' in coopera tion with Tulane University and the University of Texas, is designed to determine the effectiveness of various ways of teaching language skills to pre school children. Five dif ferent approaches are being compared and evaluated . The investigation will be completed in June 1969. and the results are expected to have significant implications for later head start and kin dergarten programs. The Franklin-Vance-War- . rcn Program was included in the study because it met a number of criteria related to age of the students, class sizes, and administrative 'or ganization. But just as importantly, according to Dr. George Lackey of the University of South Carolina and Mrs. Kosanne Gmuer, Associate Principal Investigator for the study, was the high degree of professional competency and enthusiasm on the part of the Program staff. "Mr. Cornell J. Manning, Project Director of Full Y ear Head Start Program and Mrs. George Gerber. Education Director, could hardly hive been more cooperative and eager to perform research in this critical area," stated Mrs. Gmuer. Dr. Lackey noted that a number of the Frank lin-Vance Warren program teachers had volunteered to come to the University of South Carolina from two to three weeks for special train ing in teaching language skills to pre school children. "Cer tainly," said Dr. Lackay, "w# are pleased to have thfUfek 1 in- Vance Warren M^i staff participating in Our in vestigation." Those teachers participat ing in the investigation are Mrs Mollie Cheston, Mrs. Clementine Perry, Mrs. Edna Fogg, Mrs. JoAnne Dunn, Mrs. Vardine Rodie. Mrs. Leora Davis, and Mrs. Elnora Morehead". Mrs. Carolyn Corbett is a monitor for the investigation and her function is to visit each class on a regular basis in order to assist each teacher in utilizing the various teaching methods to their fullest ex tent. The investigation began in October with several of the Henderson teachers attending a training session at the Uni versity of South Carolina. There, with other teachers from the Southeast, the Mid South. and the Southimt. they received special training in the teaching of language skills. At the same time, children in the F.V.W. Pro gram were being administered several tests of language skills. After receiving instructions for almost six months, the children will be tested again in order to ascertain improve ment. At that point the most effective teaching methods will be evident. The results of the study will be made public in the late summer or early fall of 1969. As of December 16th, all interstate sales of firearms and ammunition, other than those between licensed manu facturers. dealers and col lectors became federal crimes.
