'Canes Defeat Southwood, Wingate Thursday nighl Louisburg traveled to Salemburg and came away with an 81-71 conference triumph over the Southwood Rams. The 'Canes experienced trouble hitting from the floor in the early part of the game and trailed 29-30 at halftime. Two early 9econd half field goals put the 'Canes in the lead and they did not trail again. The lead was as large as 22 points with & minutes to go in the game. The Rams used a zone defense that gave the 'Canes trouble in the first half but with Dick Driver operating inside and Bob Walker shoot ing exceptionally' well from the outside the Hurricanes pulled away steadily in the second half. Driver scored 10 points for the game; eight in the second half, and Walker ? had 14; 1? in the second half. Larry Paschall led the 'Canes scoring with 25 points, He had four field goals, two in each half, but his total for the night mounted steadily as he hit on 17 of 18 tries from the foul line. He hit on 15 of 16 foul tries as the 'Canes pulled away in the second half. His 19 second half points was the high individual total for any 'Canes play in one half this year. Gary Van Camp led South wood' s scoring with 25 points. Steve Buffkin had 18 points and E. J. Wilder scored 12. The win gave the Canes a 6-1 conference record which ties them with Ferrum's Panthers for - the conference lead. On Saturday night the Louisburg College Hurricanes started slowly and finish like a high- speed locomotive as ..they took their third victory over Wingate's Bulldogs by a score of 82-69. The 'Canes, experiencing their .second straight cold shooting first half, were down 28-30 at halftime. They managed only 9 of 27 field goal attempts in the first half. The two teams swapped baskets in the early part of the second half until 11 minutes tq go the Bulldogs pulled ahead of the visiting 'Canes by nine points at 59-50. With 10:20 on the clock the score was 63-54 when the 'Canes started to move. With eight minutes to go the score was 67-63 Louis burg. At the 10:20 mark Terry Davis, Bob Walker and Larry Paachall led a rally that put the 'Canes ahead for good. With the score 63-56 in favor of the Bulldogs Davis scored on a tap-in; Paschall stole the in bounds pass and scored a three pointer to pull the 'Canes within two; Davis grabbed a rebound off the defensive board and Paachall hit an eighteen f<5oter to tie the game at 63-63; Walker was true , on two eighteen footers and the 'Canes were on the way to their 14th win. of the season. The 'Canes fell behine 40-25 with 4:13 to go in the flnt half but rallied behind John Lewis, Terry Davis and George Bowden to narrow that deficit to five 37-42 at halftime. Lewis scored 12 points in the first half. In the early part of the half Larry Paachall dropped in 11 points to keep the 'Canes from fall ing even farther behind. Paa chall was saddled with three fouls and had to sit out the last 6 minutes of the half. Dick Driver led an early second half rally that put the 'Canes Into the lead at 51-48.
