Highway Safety Program
- Presented At LHS Friday
A highway safety program,
featuring an Indianapolis 500 j
mile race driver, will be pre
sented in Louisburg High !
School Fridav, February 7t'h
at 8:30 A.M.
Featuring Duane Carter' 1
who has competed at Indiana
polis and other tracks
throughout the nation, the
program is now in its 15th !
year and has been seen by
more than 12,000.000 stu
dents in more than 7,000
high schools. It is being
brought to Louisburg by
Strickland Auto Supply Co.
The program has been long
recognized by educators and
law enforcement officers as a
unique method of impressing
teenagers with he responsi
bilities they must assume
once they obtain driver's li
cense.
Launched in 1953 with
only one driver, the program
was such a success that addi
tional Indianapolis stars were
added to the team; until to
day nine of them comprise
the regular group with four
others available for spot as
signments.
Awards from the National
Safety Council, the Alfred P.
Sloan Foundation. Public Re
lations Society of America,
The United States Auto Club
and Continental Casualty In
surance Company have been
presented to Champion Spark
Plug Company of Toledo for
developing and maintaining
the program.
"Continued requests from
principals who have seen the
presentation, and those who
have heard about it. make us
feel the Indianapolis drivers
are making a real impression
on students," says R. A.
Stranahan. Jr., president and
chairman of the board of
Champion. "We know from
numerous surveys the ma
jority of high school students
are fine driver.. Comments
from educators indicate we
are getting through to the
small percentage who give the
young generation such a
black eye. ,
"When such a student
hears from a professional that
needlessly spinning wheels is
the mark of a juvenile and
would cause a race driver to
be sidelined, that "showoff"
driving practices bar a racer
from competing, he identifies
with the driver and in a great
many instances changes 'his
bad driving habits," Mr.
Stranahan continued.
Whenever possible, a film
is part of the presentation.
The color movie was made
last May at Indianapolis and
the Orange County drag strip
in California and shows the
extent drivers, mechanics and
speedway officials go to in
sure safe race conditions.
Duane Carter has spent 32
years in racing and has ap
peared on every major race
track in the United States. In
addition to domestic racing,
he has appeared in Australia.
New Zealand. South America
and Europe.
