Monument
(Continued from Page 1)
the Governor's car rode the State
Attorney General, who would become
the next Governor Franklin Coun
ty's own favorite son, Thomas Walter
Bickett. Riding with Mr. Bickett was
Capt. T. S. Collie, Chairman of the
County Board of Commissioners.
, Whether late or by design, the
parade started at 11 o'clock. The
Attorney General's car was followed
by the Daughters of the Joseph J.
Davis Chapter. United Daughters of
the Confederacy. Behind them march
ed the Confederate veterans followed
by a Mounted Guard from two town
ships. There were four other Mounted
Guard units in the parade and five
floats. The floats had such themes as
"Spring of '61"; "Tenting"; "Back
From The Front"; "The Home
Guard"', and "The Return".
The procession stopped at the spot
where The Monument now stands.
Rev. Duke gave the Invocation. Mr.
Bickett acted as Master of Ceremonies
for the occasion. He introduced Mrs. J.
P.. Winston, President" of the local
U.D.C. chapter, who presented the
monument to Mrs. Marshall Williams
of Faison, N. C., State President of the
U.D.C.
Mrs. Williams spoke of the U.D.C.,
formed twenty years earlier and told
of the 90,000 members in 33 states.
After appropriate words for those
being honored, the unveiling was per
formed by four young daughters of
members of the local U.D.C. The girls
were Mary Turner, Francis Barrow,
Pattie Gee Hill and Beveria Pearce.
Following the unveiling, Mrs. Wil
liams presented the monument, on
behalf of her organization, to T. S.
Collie, Chairman of the Board of
Franklin County Commissioners.
While the choir sang, second-grade girls
scattered flowers around the base of
the 30-foot structure. Franitlinton and
Louisburg military units fired a volley
in salute.
The Monument was left standing
alone as the ceremonies moved to the
grounds of 'the graded school", a few
yards away. There, the Governor of
North Carolina, introduced by Frank
lin's illustrous Judge Charles M.
Cooke, told the crowd:
"This monument will not be limit
ed to the art of the sculptor. It will
speak to men of heroic days. It stands
f for the soldier in plain ray and he must
not be forgotten.
"Generations may come and cycles
may fly away, but here under the giant
oak, eloquent lips yet unborn will
pronounce eulogies upon this beautiful
monument.
"No heroism is ever lost". ?
