County Students Receive College Degrees NC State-Raleigh Raleigh -? The steadily ex panding enrollment at North Carolina State University and other universities across the state and nation was reflected Saturday morning when 16 Fnnklin County graduates were awarded degrees at NCSU. That number was more than double the number of Franklin students who were graduated at NCSU a year ago. The Franklin students earned degrees in the largest commencrtnent in history at N. C. State. Chancellor John T. Cald well conferred a total of 2,300 degrees, for all students completing academic require ments since June 1968. By contrast, NCSU gradu ated 1,900 men and women a year ago. Included on the Franklin list were two who earned coveted master's degrees. William C. Stainback, son of Mr. and Mrs. George G. Stainback of Rt. 1, Youngs ville, was awarded a master's degree in math education. He is married and the father of three children. Larry M. Sykes, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Sykes of Rt. 1, Castalia, earned a master's in biological and agricultural engineering. Stainback and Sykes were among a record number of some 460 master's degree winners. Another 140 won doctoral degrees, also a rec ord number. Those figures on master's and- doctoral degrees estab lished NCSU as a major cen ter for advanced studies in the South. Cheek received the degree of Bachelor of Science in com mencement ceremonies Sun day, June 1, at North Caro lina College. Miss Cheek is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James 6. Cheek, Rt. 1, Kittrell, N. C. She received honors during her 4 years of attendance at North Carolina College in in tramural and health educa tion. CADET JOLLY Cadet Michael King Jolly, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Jolly of Louisburg, won the coveted award for excellence in scholasticism, at the Com mencement Exercises at Ran dolph - Macon Academy on Sunday for having the highest average of any cadet for the year 1968-69. In addition he was named to the President's Honor list and presented a scholastic ribbon. Jolly is ac tive in the school's band. Glee Club, chapel choir, and is a member of the cross-country winning track team. Cadet Jolly has been promoted from private to lance corporal and the first undergraduate ever to receive the award. Receives Masters Degree Mrs. Frances W. Fuller was among the 461 to receive master's degrees at com mencement exercises at North Carolina State Univer sity in Raleigh Saturday, May 31. Mrs. Fuller received her degree in Master of Educa tion. Her husband, George D. Fuller also received a Good mate Diploma. Mrs. Fuller is employed as Home Economics Extention Agent in Franklin County. Mr. Fuller is employed by the N. C. Dept. of Agriculture. The Fullers reside at 116, Allen Lane in Louisburg.
