Little Things Count
Putting into practice "it's
the little things that count,"
members of Chatham County
Extension Homi makers Clubs
have collected their sewing
scraps for the past five years.
Through their efforts more
than 300 pounds of scrap
fabric have been delivered to
McCain and Dorothea Dix
hospitals and the rest home in
Pittsboro.
Patients use the donated
scraps to make quilts, toys
and some small gift items,

agent.
Barn Is Workshop
"I look forward to going
to the barn each morning,"
Mrs. Grady Jordan, Coluipbus
County homemaker told Mrs.
Elaine N. Blake, home eco
nomics Extension agent-Jrqr
the barn is Mrs. Jordan's fur
niture refinishing workshop.
In the past seven years, the
homemaker has refinished
nearly all the furniture in her
house and has assisted and
instructed other in redoing
over 200 pieces.
Her friends and neighbors
talked her into going into
business for herself.
She says "I was willing to
do it if people would pay for
the time involved." So far,
Mrs. Jordan has had as much
furniture to refinish as she
has had the time to give, Mrs.
Blake relates.
Seniors Lend Hand
Senior homemakers in
Rockingham County no long
er sit idly at home. Instead
they share their knowledge
with other womefl by de
veloping hobbies of their own
and by learning new skills,
says Mrs. Zadie V. Jackson,
home economics Extension
agent.
One such citizen, Mrs. Jen
nie Tucker, Ruffin, Rt. 1, has
joined other women in eight
mattress making workshops.
She has made 12 urethane
foam mattresses.
Through such a workshop
program, families in the coun
ty have been able to obtain
fine quality bedding at a price

Sews A Fine Seam
"Sewing a fine seam" is
nothing new to 11-year-old
Shirley Goodnight of the
Concordia 4-H Club, Rowan
County. Shirley has been sew
ing since she was in second
grade.
But this year she outdid
herself by making 67 gar
ments, reports Betty Scott,
assistant home economics Ex
tension agent. These garments
ranged from skirts, blouses
and dresses for herself to bed
room shoes for gifts.
?Shirley told the agent she
learned many new skills this
year. She added that she
enjoyed planning, construct
ing and using the garments
she had made.
