Dr. Brooks Is Guest Minister Youngsville - Dr. Nathan Brooks, who is with the State Baptist Headquarters in Ra leigh, was guest minister at the Youngsville Baptist Church Sunday morning to deliver the message (or an Ordination Service for Mrs. A. N. Corpening. Using the topic "Some Deacons I Have Known", Dr. Brooks told of personal experiences with deacons truly dedicated to service for the Lord. Church Minister Rev. L. Jervais Phillips conducted the symbolic Laying On Of Hands Service in which dea cons of the church participat ed. Mrs. Corpening is the first woman in the local church history to be elected to the Board of Deacons. She is di rector of all church choirs,' a Sunday School teacher, has served on the Church Coun cil, as Bible School Principal and teacher, on various res ponsible church committees, and works with programs for young people. Mr. L. A. Woodlief and Mr. A1 DePorter, who were already ordained deacons, re turned to the Board this year and will serve a three year term corresponding to that of Mrs. Corpening. Other active deacons are Chairman Marvin Roberts and W. R. Evans, A. E. Hall, E. J. Pearce, R. E. Cheatham, R. M. Cooper. In active deacons are W. T. Moss, M. K. Carswell, S. E. Thanrington, J. T. Moss, T. E. Lindsey, Dr. A. N. Corpening, Everette Pearce l and Bruce Strickland. Special music at the ser vice was by the yoking people's choir singing "No Man Is An Island". Flowers were placed in the church by the three children of Dr. and Ruth Mercer Circle Meets (Frk. B.W.) The Ruth Mer cer Cirde of the Ffanklinton United Methodist Church met at the Educational Building Thursday evening. Miss Edith Jackson, chair man, opened the meeting with a Thanksgiving prayer. Minutes were read by Mrs. C. H. Weston. A financial report was given by Mrs. Phil Franklin Whitfield. Miss Jackson expressed ap preciation to tho circle mem bers tor their cooperation in sponsoring the luncheon for District Woman's CJub meet ing. The group voted to put one-third of the profit on the luncheon in the Parsonage Fund and two-thirds in the Building Fund. Sponsorship or the church nursery was approved by the circle members. Miss Jackson announced flower assignments for the church sanctuary during No vember and December. Mrs. Wood row Ha skins, program leader, called atten tion to the tact that it was the season for people to be come aware or what they are thankrul for in the world. Mentioning some personal things for which Mrs. Haskins was thankful, she pointed out that they were selfish state ments. Thanksgiving should be for things that one can reach out for -such as belief in God and taith in one's church and tel lowman. Mrs. Haskins stated, "I must be able to look at the world as God's World." The program leader asked the group to name some needs or their church. Fol lowing the discussion the (roup planned to study rea tures of the United Methodist Church during January. During the social hour, Mrs. E. A. Harris, Jr. and Mrs. PhD Whitfield served brow nies, nuts and coffee. The Rev. Earl Richardson, pastor of the local Methodist Church, was a visitor. Mrs. A. N. Corpening. A workshop on "Deacons At Their Tasks" was held at the Baptist Church Sunday afternoon conducted hy Dr. Brooks, for all active and inactive' deacons and their wiyes and husbands. ' A program of Thanks giving Hymns was presented by the children's choir at the Sunday evening worship ser vice under the direction of Mrs. A. N. Corpening. A med ley of hymns was played by Mrs. L. J. Phillips at the piano and Mrs. A1 DePorter at the organ. Christening James Frederic Green, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James Frederic Green of Baltimore, Maryland, was christened Sunday, November 9. at St. Philip and St. James Catholic Church in Baltimore. God father was Mr. Danny Hoyle and Godmother was Mrs. Danny Hoyle. World Wide Bible Reading Observed (Frk. B.W.I The Franklin ton Baptist Church and the Franklinton I'nited Metho dist Church are jointly ob serving World Wide Bible Reading. November 23 through December 31. ft-eparatory to National Bible Week, which begins November 23, the young people of the two churches distributed Bible reading lists throughout Franklinton No vember 16. During the week of No vember 24 there will be a Bible Exhibit of special in terest in the window of Franklinton Hardware Store. The young people of the Franklinton United Metho dist Church will visit the Rare Book Room of the Duke Uni versity Library Sunday after noon. November 23.
