Mrs. Jewel C. Bartholomew, facul ty advisor of the scholastic honor society, installed the honorees, before an assembly of high school students and guests. Cassandra Versteeg presid ed. Retiring president Caro lyn Chadwick presented a de votional meditation concen trie to the organization's motto: "Let us lead by sen1 ing others." Mrs. Bartholo mew annotated the purpose and history of the National Beta Club. In a candle-lighting cere mony, 1969-1970 officers publicly pledged active sup port to the leadership-service organization. Representing the membership, Anne Strick land declared .cooperation and loyalty. Heading the Beta Club are Cassandra Versteeg, president; Charlie Hobgood, vice-president; Linda Patter son, secretary; and Carolyn Chadwick, treasurer. Vows were repeated by Jane Burrell, Patricia Free man, Sally Griffin, Meredith Jones. Robin Kerley, Nancy Lohmueller, Gregory May, Henry Mitchell, Stella Shel ton, Cynthia Shillinglaw, Jac queline Smith, Marilyn Smith, and Maurice York. Each initiate received the National Beta Club certificate of membership and the pin insignia. Debra Burnette will be officially inducted into tlie organization in a private ser vice later. To be eligible for initiation in the educational organiza tion which claims a consti tuency of 96.191 academic achievers in twenty-one states, a student must main tain for three semesters a scholastic average of at least 90 and a conduct grade not lower than A-. His attributes should include honorable character, good mentality, creditable achievement, and commendable attitude. He must be approved by the school administrator and by the Beta Club committee. The local chapter's com mittee include Principal Tho mas A. Riggan and two facul ty members. Mrs. Jeannette Arnold and Mrs. Marjorie Leonard. LHS senior Charlie Hob good is 1969-1970 president of the Franklin County Beta Club, of which Mrs. Jewel Bartholomew is sponsor. G S Drive A Success Youngsville - Mrs. Claude Edwards, chairman of the lo cal Girl Scout annual fund raising campaign, reports that the drive has been unusually successful. With all solicitors reports now in, contributions amount to a total of $282.90. Mrs. Edwards reports that a few more donations may be made. She has been striving for a goal of $300.00. Volunteers who assisted Mrs.' Edwards were Mes dames: Allen Stallings, Hazel Lock, Sam Ball, Lucy DePort er, James Smith, E. J. Pearce, A. N. Corpening, Tobie Hoi den, W. M. Roberts.
