The MUslMlppj Oatraca. s Meridian. November 10. In rotrard to the Marion troubles no new develop ments have been made since Tuesday nigh, except the arrest of one negro. After the lapse ef two days and conversa tion with forty or fifty different partici pants, a recapitulaJon of the whole affair, in Dner, is as ioiiows ; On Tuesday last, whUe the State elec tion was., progressing, at Alarton, this oounty, Jos. Barrett, an aged white man having just voted, Was insulted by a negro at .the polls. . Barrett-raised his arm to resent It with a blow. Some say he drew stick oh the negro. Before he oouW strike, another negro, named Frank John son, shot him with a pistol in the neck, killing him almost instantly. Geo. John son, colored, formerly a slave of Barrett, ran up to defend .his old master, and was shot by SiOegro, from the effect of which be , died to-day, . and a general shooting among (the negroes then commenced. The whites were, ail unarmed. ...Will Vance, a white Republican, is said to have . induced the negroes to begin firing. ; As eoon as the news reached Meridian, 8heriff Henderson, with a posse of seventy-five men,' repaired to the sconce. The negroes: bad,, all left. A party of twenty; men i went to the house of Ed. Vance, a white Republican, and ap proached, him with warrants of arrest. They demanded his surrender, and were replied to by Vance teliing them to go to hell. They Were then fired i ito and re pulsed. By five o'clock in the afternoon relief came, and the sheriff, with his men, surrounded the house. The sheiff called out to those inside to surrender, and a white flag was presented at the door. The sheriff met the bearer on half-way ground, and on a promise that he would protect Vsnoe and all the house, a surrender was agreed on. The sheriff drove his buggy op to the gate to take in his prisoner. Ul Vaooe, and hie men gathered about the yard, anticipating no dan ger. John Vance, at that moment, was i seen in a stooping attitude behind a corner 1 ef the stabies, near by, with a gun leveled eni the posse, but before he could fire he was shot dead. 'At the same instant, while Ai, Ok Warren, of the posse, was pledging protection to the- females of Vance's fam ily, he wa shot through the head by some one frotn tbe inside of the house and in- stantly killed. The, sheriff and Hardin Jones, of the posse, were . slightly wound ed. . Ed. Vance escaped. Several negroes were seen to fire on the posse from the house and run. off. No negroes are known to be killed 'J- four or five are wounded. Wffl Vaee was rMM liUUaW the sheriff in, a buggy at night and lodged is jail. No harm was offered him. Young fid.yanee, a boy of 17, was captured, but was allowed to remain at home without molestation. . Yesterday a party of fifty men went,' under direction of the sheriff, is) search of ,EL Vance . and others con cerned in the riot None were found ex cept a negro named Martin Mallone, who took: aa Active part in the riot. He is now in jaiL. i 7 , ,. , No negroes were murdered in the swamps, and none were 'shot at except those resisting arrest and running out of Vance's house, nor have the blacks about Marion fled in terror, notwithstanding the sensational statements telegraphed since. The circus was in Meridian to-day, and the streets were crowded with negroes as if nothing had happened. After the fight three kegs of powder and a large supply of buckshot were found in Vance's house. He is said to have bought a keg of powder Saturday. ' J roralg-a Maws. London, November 9. Mr. Glad stone, in his; speech at Guild Hall last! night, declared that the law would be en- forced, with firmness and decision in Ire lantL 1 lis enforcement had been entrusted! to those agents (who, whether oonstabu lary or military, have earned a title to the; gratitude of .their countrymen by the; courage and exemplary patience with; which they have performed their difficult! duties. The Timet thb morning says; "This: emphatic statement may serve as a warn! ing to those , tenants who being tempted yield even temporarily to the 'no rent' policy. Wo understand that the practi cal difficulty ot engaging in a conflict with a large body of Irish tenantry , will be met if the occasion arises, by taking oof by one the counties in which resist anoe to rent may be organized, and by using! far the enforcement of the law the whole power of the executive. The landlords, il assured that the government will strenuously support their legal rights! now that the last semblance of injustice is removed, may be called upon in certain districts to postpone their demands until the recalcitrant tenants are reduced to sub mission elsewhere. It is plain that this ! law can be effectta ly vindicated. Those who have time to reflect will' probably profit by the exemplary punishment of their fellows.
