As far as we have been able to estimate the sentiment of our peo ple, they are almost unanimously in favor of the 20.000 bond issue for street improvement, all realiz ing the crying need-of good streets. On the question of voting 80. 000 for water works and sewerage. however, there is some vivision of opinion. Most of those who op pose the water ami sewerage bonds, do so. not 1 localise these utilities are not need, but liecause they prefer that private individuals or a private company should own and control these things. They say let a compain put in water and sewerage and then let those who want these things, buy and pay for them, but don't put a tax on the w hole town and force those who do not want these things to help pay for them. This argument sounds pretty well and is calculated to appeal to those w li o d o n o t think the matter out. A little consideration, however, will show the fahtcy of the argument. All towns when they rcachaeer tain si.c lind it absolutely neces sary to do away with all open wells or surface wells, such as Lenoir has, to preserve the health of the community. There are many wells in Lenoir now, that doubtlss are unlit for domestic use and are pro ductivc of the sickness that is to be found in certain sections of the town and if the water from these wells was analized it would in many instances show dangerous impuri ties. This being true and it un questionably is, it is only a j lies tioc of short time until the present water suppU of the tow n must of necessity be abandoned. So the soouei the town makes provision to meet tliiscdnluiencv thelietter. Now suppose the town otes the 80,1 ion ImumI issue I., i water and sewerags ami it takes the total amount to put in the systems, (the engiiieei sa s n ill m,t. but tin arguments sake let us consider that U does) v, hat will be the cost to t he people, of having '0,O0 gallons of hi n- water deliwred and distributed to them daily and to hac the comforts and conven encies ol a lirst class sewerage ss tim. Interest on bonds .ei year at I,',; 1.800 Cost of maintaining. looking after atei shed, etc., 1 '', on cost SOI I.I in lotal .. loo This does not provide for a sink ing fund to pay the londs, but tlu BJe of water, or water rents as they are called., will, it is estimated by those w ho know, more than provide for snch fund. 8o the d- zenS of Lenoir will get their water in gadded. Suppose a private concern puts in the system, the people will liavo to pay the interest on the bonds, cost of maintainaiico and a ; profit to ho owners businss. This profit will vary from 10 to 25 ' per cent." or may be more, and will very ma terially increase to cost to the peo yle. Add 10 per cent, even, on the cost of the plant for profit, to the above estimate and that is a small profit for a private water company, who has a town by the throat to exact and we have an annual sum of 13.600 that the people will have to as against $5,600 if the town owns the sys tem . And don 't forget that every body will have to pay it, for the wells will be condemned and filled up just as quick, if a private com pany owns the plant as they will if the town owns it. So everybody will have to use the water- whether they want to or not and of course any private concern doing busi ness will add all costs and then a profit to the priceh whic the cousum er has to buy. So between the two propositions the people of Lenoir should not hesitate, but build and own their water and sewerage sys tems. The Doctor Awav from Home When Most deeded. People are often very much disap pointed to find that their fainilv phy sician is away from home when they most need his services. Diseases like cramp colic and cholera morbus re quire prompt treatment, and have in many instances proven fatal before medicine could be procured or a phy sician summoned. The right way is to keep at hand a bottle of Cham berlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrh oea Remedy. No physician can. pre scribe a better medicine for these diseases. By having it iu the house you escape much pain and suffering and all risk. Buv it now; it may save life. For sale by J. E. Shell, Dr. Kent and (irauite rails Drug Co. The arrest and imprisonment of several agents of the Southern Railway, and imposing heavy lines upon the Company, liecause the Company did not comply with provisions of the rate bill, passed by the last Legislature, seems to us, under the circumstances, to say the least to have been in very bad taste. The hearing of the cases, made up to test the const! -tionality of the rate bill, w as go ing on quietly, an able Judge hav ing Iteen appointed special master to take testimony and thoroughly investigate the matter, and report his findings to the I'nited States Court of appeals. The interest of the public had been carefully guar- ded and protected by bonds and special orders of Judge Pritchartl and for the several States Courts to "but in" in the way t hey have, seems to us. can do no good to any body and only work to create stronger feeling between the peo ple and the railroads and imped lather than facilitate the equitable idjustment of the differences. Ve do not. w ish to be regarded, as irj any rellecting on the conduct of the several State Judicial officers who liguered in the cases, but their conduct appears to have been "a play to the Galleries" or an effort to court faor with the people whose interests as stated atxive are thoroughly protected. The need of spiritual power in our congregational services, so that the unconverted will seek and find a present salvation, is felt by many, and we believe there is a sincere desire on part of many that every service should be crowned with this glorious evidence of the pow er of the gospel to save But will w e ever see this till we learn how to leave oil' our stage performances and get out of the shroud of form alism, giving the Holy Spirit the right of way? If two-thirds of our choirs could either be sent to heav en or induced to sing (yes, sing) gospel hymns, it would help won derfully in the effort to make our services occasions of soul-saving. How it would thrill the congrega tion if, on next Sunday evening, the choir director would lead the whole congregation in "The Ninety and Nine" or "There's a Great Day Coming,'' or "Nothing but the Blood of Jesus,'' and fraftkly inform us that hereafter the spec ial programs of music will be for special occasions!
