" In view of the earlhitss of the soason bur town
has already within it liuiili large ahare of
Irangert-moro than r U'ual at l la time of
the year. We nop, too, tliat as I Me summer
grows on we may hare among u a largo inctense
pon any'proyious J car.
Western Nortk Carolina now preont tne
rroatcHt Ittnctioai lo the hirer of hue itcenery,
aaJ w hope ere (toon will offer the moot improved
facilities to travel. Already the railroad runs
near to the Catawba White Sulphur Spring, and
within a few mile of the line scenery winch
surround our sister town of Morpanton bcyoud
tlio Ridge. Near that place are the Piedmont
Springs, situated in the midst or . lino scenery.
On the Swannnnm rond. in the Pleasant Gardens.
may be found the delightful residenco and hotel
atronc Sulphur'Sprine. Still fartheratthe footof
" Col. Carson; a few miles from it is also a large and
of the MounUius u Gen. llurgin sand on tins side
fif the llidgc may be found George C. Alexander's,
in a cool spot, almost on the banks of the Swan
nanoa. A few mile to the west of these the
151ack Mountain stands to claim the attention of a!l
travelers. And on it the hotel of onr friend
Col. T. T. Patton.
. On Hickory Nut Gap Road, at Harris's Falls,
Chimney Uoel and other objects of grandeur and
interest should be wsitcd by all. herrill's oil
the Gap is a pleasant place, und from thence is a
fine view.
On the South Carolina road the chief point of
interest is the Flat Rock section ; a good luki.is
there and a con) pleasant atmosphere. Heuder
sonvillehas in ita vicinity many places worth vis
iting. The traveler'will find a pleasant stopping
place at Mr. G. M. Robert's half way to -Ashe-vilie.
AtAaheville-lhe trerIer ean spend awhile
pleasantly we leave hi in to chouse his stopping
place.' The Kagle at tho table of which we
hold a scat the Buck. Hotel or at the Buncombe
House.
The Sulphur Springs, five miles from Aslic
viile, may be visited, and few more pleasantly
located places can bo found anywhere. To those
disposed to have a mountain frolic .a trip to
the 1'ink Reds in Henderson will afford ample
room lor sport. A trip to Wayncsvillc and the
Western counties would be a source ofenjoy
ment to any one disposed to journey thus' far.
Grander scenery does, not exist everywhere. To
the man of feiencc gwlogist or botanist it is
a field of wealth.
Rut ia our opinion the most delightful place
in every respect is the Warm Springs. Fine
scenery, beautiful shade trees, a well fitted up
hotel and a tablo that cannot be surpassed.
Warm and col J baths, and drives and walks, not
to be surpassed anywhere. Every facility for the
enjoyment of a bunting or fishing excursion, and
an air of quiet in the deep shade of the trees, a
spell in the murmur of the rapid river that
makes one feel quiet, dreamy, easy, quite deli
cious. The proprietor has expended much in re-;
fitting his house and re-building the- baths, &c.
The route to the Springs from this place baa at
every few miles a good stopping lace : Alexan
der's, Baird's, and Farnsworth's he traveler
can rest pleasantly at all of them.
We have, in brief, given a sketch of the noted
' places or routes for the traveler to stop at. There
ia one fault of our people they do not advertise
and blow enough. It is a fault of North Caro
lina she deprecates everything that is at name.
We trust that rradua'ly our people will lejrn tho
use of printer s ink, as The irginiaiis have, lu
view of the bad facilities for reaching us, how
ever, they are not so much to be blamed. AJte
rille Advocate.

By and bye it will be deemed a crime to have
been a citizen of the old school, an old-fashioned
Whig, or even a gentleman of learning or poli

for a keeper of a. grocery', or a splitter of rails,

! Tn On. R-aioN. Through tht courtesy of
Mr. John Robinson, we lava Mea permitted to
read a loiter written by hrm to hb friend, K. H.
Chase, from the famous oil region about Tituv
ville, Pa. The account almost staggers belief;
but aa it u recorded by a reliable man, ana ia cer

aro bound to- credit He ttatoment He mentions
four different welU, the product of which is four
thousand three hundred and sixty gallons per
twenty-four hours, or on an avererage of one
thousand and ninety gallons each. Oneof these
wells (that of D. Coopley, Barnstable & Co.,)
issues oil for hours at a.time, at the rate of one
gallon and a half per minute. Mr. Chase aav
that in less than three months there will be
finished, and in process of construction, between,
five hundred and a thousand wells. Civil engin

road with a special reference to this, enormoua
and increasing oil trade. Wheeling lntdligenecr.
