We believe our city f thcrs were de
prived by the last Legislature of the
power to remove the porches and piazzas
encroaching on the side-walks, but some
action should be taken at once to re
move this intolerable nuisance. We
believe there arc over one hundred
housts built on the line of the side-walk,
and their steps or porches infringing on
the right ot way. Let us have some
thing done to rid us of this annoyance.

London, September 17.
A dispatch was received here, announcing
the arrest by the German authorities yester
day, of Edmund Abont, the French author
treated it as a trifling affair. It now appears,
however, that the case presents a serious as
pect, and creates considerable excitement.
Abont is confined at Straatburg, and his
wife and children are not permited to see
him. The cause of arrest is said to be publi
cation of articles from his pen on the Ger
man occupation of the Trench-Rheinish
provinces which have afforded the latter
government. fc
