Greeley's attempted blackmailing of the Tobacco Manufacturers' Association. During that time, no contradiction, no explana tion, no excuse has been offered. The facts we alleged, therefore, must stand admitted as we know they roust, for a judicial record is not e isily disposed of by a flippant assertion that, like Doolitlle'i corruption, it was an "error of judgment and taste." It is wt'l', then, to ag;tin ncall these admitted facts. First Mr. Greeley subscribed for five thousand dollars ot the stock of the Company, for tchlch he not only never paid a cetit, but for which hs never expect ed to iaya cent. He put his name down as a lecoy to induce otlurs to pay their money, and he succeeded. Second lie consented to be, and acted asaTrustee of the. Company with Tweed and Sands. Third When things appeared not to be going so prospe ously as he had hoped, though the Company was per fectly solvent, and he and -Tweed enter ed into a scheme, in connection with the Ring Attorney-General, Gratz Nathan and W. O. Bartlett, well known ring lawyers, to compel the Association to buy Tweed and Greeley offunder threats in case they refused, of pattyig them into tbe bands of a receiver to be ap pointed by Cardozo. Fourth Tweed having sold out, Greeley unblushingly told them they must settle with Yeaton or thfy woul4 have ' trouble. lie did thir, though Yeaton was judially known to be a far from reputable man. When Yeaton was applied to, in order to ce on what terms they could settle, tbe Company found that they were required to pay Greeley par for his stock, for wb'ch he bad not paid one cent. Fifth Within a week after they re fused to pay Greeiey, Cardozo decided to appoint a receiver upon a motion which be bad kept under advisement that is waiting for Greeley and Graz to tell him when to decide it lor nearly three months. Sixth Only an accident and the strength of the reform movement pre vented Greeley from ruining the Com pany. Is this the kind of '"Od Honesty" that the people want for President? We do not wonder that some of the stock holders, who subscribed upon the faith of Greeley's nnme, are meditating pro ceedings to compel him to pay up. IK Y; Time. When the Democratic orators ta k ot forgiveness we are ready to listen to them, for forgiveness is a manly and a christian duty ; but when they ask us to forget, they make a demand to' which, without eradicating our manhood, it is impossible to accede. Is there anything to be ashamed of in the struggles oi the Republic to govern itself that the citizens of the Republic should banisb them from recollection f Was it a good deal to rebel ?
