National Republican Platform.
The Republican party 3f the United
States, assembled in National Conven
tion in the city ot Philadelphia, on the
5th and 6th days ot June, 1872, again
declares its faith appeals to its history,
and announces its position upon the
questions before the country :
1. During eleven years of supremacy
it lias accepted with grand courage the
culemn duties of the times. It sup
pressed a gigantic rebellioo, emanci
pated 4,000,000 of slaves, decided the
equal citizenship ot all, and established
universal suffrage. Exhibiting unpar
alleled magnanimity, it criminally pun
ished no man for political offenses, and
warmly welcomed all who proved their
lojfclty by obeying the laws and dealing
jastly w'tb their neighbors, it has
iteadily decreased, with a firm bund,
tbe resultant disorders of a great war,
and initiated a wise and humane pol
icy toward the Indi-na. The Pacific
railroad and similar enterprises have

protected and encouraged, and a full
acknowledgment of tbe naturalized
citizens' lights, secured from European
Powers. A uniform national curreucy
has been provided, repudiation frowned
down, the national credit sustained un
der most extraordinary burdens, and
Lew bonds negotiated at lower rates.
The revenues have been carefully col
lected and honestly applied. Despite
annual large reductions ot tbe fates ot
taxation, the public debt has been re
daced during General Gram's Presiden
cyattbe rate ol one hundred millions
a year. Great financial crisis have been
areided and peace and plenty prevail
throughont the land. Menacing foreign
difficulties have been peacefully and 1
honorably composed, and the honor and upon t tie balance, aud confidently ex

We believe the people will not intrust

3. Complete liberty and exact equal
ity io tbe enjoyment of all civil, politi
cal and public rights should 1 be estab

throughout the Union by eflicient and
appropriate- State and Feudal legisla
tion. Neither tbe law nor the Admin
istration should admit of any discrimi
nation iu: respect of citizens by reason
of race, creed, color, or previous condi
tion of servitude.
8. The recent amendments to the
Constitution should ba cordially sus
tained, because they are right, not mere
tj tolerated because they are iaw, and
should be carried out according to their
spirit by appropriate legislation, the
enforcement of which can safely be in
trusted only to the party that secured
those amendments.
i. The National Government should
wek to maintain honorable peace with

upon importation; the duties of which
should be so adjusted as to aid in se

prosperity of the Whole country.
8. We hold in undying honor the
soldiers and sailors whose valor saved
the Union. Their pensions are a eacrcd
lebt of the nation, and tbe widows
and orphans of those who died tor
their country are ca titled to the care of
an additional legislation as will extend
the bounty ol the government to all our
soldiers aud sailors who were honorably
discharged, and who, in the line ortiuty,

9. The tloclrinq of Great Britain and
other Europeaa Powers concerning al
legiaace, "Once a subject always a sub
ject," having at last, through tbe efforts
of tbe Republican party, been aban
doned, and the American idea of the
riht to transfer allegiance having been
accepted by Europeau nations, it is the
duty of our Government to guard with
jealous cure the right of adopted citi
zens against the assumption of unau
thorized claims by their former Gov
ernments, aud we urjje continual careful
encouragement aud protection of volun-
tal7 immigration.
10. The frankinir urivilesre ouirht to
be abolished- and tho way prepared for
a speedy reduction in tbe rate of post-
age.
11. AmoDg the questions which press
for attention is that which concerns the
relations of capital and labor, and the
Republican party recognize the duty of

and for labor tbe crtator of capita!, the
largest opportunities aud a just bhare
of the mutual profits of these two great
servants of civilization.
12. We hold that Congress aud the
President have only fulfilled an imper
ative duly in their measures for the
suppression of violent and treasonable
organizdtious in certain lately rebellious
regions, and for the prorectiou ol the
ballot-box, and therefore' tuey are en
titled to the thanks of the nation.
lo. We denounce the lepuaiattou ol
the public debt iu any form or disguise
as a natiouaj criua.
We witness with
pride the reduction of the priucipal ot
the debt and ot the rates ot interest
14. Tu . Kepublican party is mindful
ol its obligations to the lojal women of
America for their noble donation to the
cause oi freedom, their admission to the
wider fields of usefulness is viewed
with eati&tACtion, and the honest de
mands of any class of citizens lor addi
tioaal riuts should be treated with
respectful consideration.
15. We heartily approve the action
ot Congress in extcr.diug amnesty to
those lately in rebellion, and rejoice in
the giowtb of peace and fraternai feel
ing throughout the land.
16. The Republican party propose to
respect the rights reserved by the peo
ple to themselves as carefully as the
powers delegated by them to the State
and to the Federal Government. It
disapproves of th3 resort to unconstitu
tional laws for tbe purpose of removing
evils.by iuteiference with rights net
surrendered by the people to either the
State or National Government.
17. It ia the duty ot tbe General
Government to adopt such measures as
will tend to encourage American com
merce and ship-building.
18. We believe that the modest patri
otism, the earnest purpose, tbe sound
judgment, the practical wisdom, the
incorruptible integrity and the Ulustn
ous services ot Ulysses S. Grant, have
commended him to .the heart ot tbe
American people, and with him at our
head we stand -o day upon anew march
to victorv.
