Mr EUis, of Colnmbua, introduced a
petiti n from citizens of Columbus
county, praying an act to prevent the
sale of ardent spirits within one mile oi
I'eacock's btore. in said county.
Mr Dunham, from special committte,
on the calendar and adjournment, re
ported that having examined the calen
dar of the two Houses, they thought
o'clock on Monday, the 3rd of "March,
providing niht sessions be held up to
that time, and offered the following
resolution :
Resulted) That the General Assembly
adjourn on Monday, the 3rd of March,
at 12 o'clock M, to re-assemble on the
third Monday in November next.
Adopted.
Mr Ellis, of Catawba, introduced a
bill to incorporate the North Carolina
Classc3 of the Reformed Church of the
United States.
Mr Gudger, a bill to incorporate the
John's River Bridge Company.
On motion Of Mr Cunningham, the
bill, with the . amendments from-the
committee, authorizing cities and towns
of 2,000 inhabitants to establish and
maintain public schools, was ordered to
be printed.
The bill providing for the election of
the officers of the General Assembly,
and defining the duties of the same, was
placed upon its third reading, am1, after
various amendments were adopted, the
bill was tabled.
Mr Walker offered a petition from the
citizens of Rutherford in relation to the
Ilickory Nut Turnpike Company. Filed
with the bill concerning the same.
Mr Flemming called up bill in favor
of the Marion and Ashevillo Turnpike.
Made the special order far 11 o'clock
to-morrow.
Mr Powell, under a suspension of the
rules, called up bill ordering the print
ing of the muster roll of 1812. Three
hundred copies to be printed and dis
tributed. Adopted.
Mr Harris called up bill allowing per
sous who may have erected buildings
upon public grounds, witiiout injury
thereto, to remove the same. Adopted.
Bill relating to the improvement and
promotion of the agriculture of the State
was considered. i
Mr Norwood offered a substitute
therefor to the effect that tl: State
Geologist shall devote so much of his
time as he can to the mode or system of
agricultural cultivation now in use in
the State, and that the Superintendent
of Public Instruction be instructed to
cause the simple elements of agriculture
to be taught in all the public schools of
the State.
The substitute was referred to com
mittee on Immigration, who have in
preparation a bill covering the grounds
therein stated.
The bill chartering the Great West
ern Air Line Railway company came up
as special order, to be run from some
point near Weldon on the Virginia line
to Charlotte, with a capital stock of
13,000,000. Passed second reading.
Mr Epps introduced a bill to amend
the charter ol the Scotland Neck and
Halifax Railroad company. Referred.
Mr Murphy, a bill for the benefit of
the North Carolina Deaf and Dumb
Asy'um. Referred.
Bill to amend an aot referring to ad
ministrators and executors, section GG,
chanter 113. laws oi 1868 and 'G9.
Passed third reading.
Bill revising the act incorporating
the Bank of Raleigh re-enacting the
same. Failed to pass its third reading.
On motion of Mr Flemming, the vote
was reconsidered, and the farther con
sideration of the question postponed
until 9 o'clock to-night.
The "Machinery Bill" was made
special order for 11 o'clock to-morrow
and the same every morning until the
bill shall have been disposed of.
The question to reconsider the vote,

nient regarding the J udiciary was lost,
was made the special order for Friday
at 12 o'clock.
Mr Dnnrram moved that 2o0 addi
tional coDies of the report of the com
mittee on Public Charities be printed
for distribution. Adopted.

Mr Hill, from same committee, sub
mitted a minority reoort adverse to the
measure, believing that the majority of

not wish such a change.
The bill passed its second reading by
a vote of yeas 23, nays II.

Secretary of Stats and that of the Audi
