l)e(goming float ti WILMINGTON, N. C. Siturday, July J9th, 1873. The Washington Republican iaya "the dcmocritic papers have wonderfully short memories. This infirmity if par ticularly illustrated in the case of the Congressional back pay. The whole blame of the passage of that measure ia laid upon the Republican majority, when the, fact is it could not have passed without the assistance and Totea of the democracy. The record stands thus: In the House 51 Republicans voted for it and CO against a majority of nine against the increase. The democratic vote stood 48 in favor of its passage and U7 against it a majority 11 in faror of its passage and 37 against it a majori ty of 11 in favor of the back pay, In the Senate 23 Republican Senators voted for it and 22 against, while 13 demo crats voted for and only 5 against Tak ing the aggregage of both houses, W8 find that 82 Republicans voted against and 74 in its the passage of the bill favor, giving a Republscan majority of 8 against it. The democrats who voted against it were 61, and those in favor 42 a democratic majority of 19 in favor brthc "grab." In a word, the case stands thus: A. majority of the Repub licans in the two houses .voted against the bill, while a majority of the demo crats voted in favor of its passage. m PjtoifEssoit Wise's contemplated bal loon voyage across the Atlantic is fixed for the 20th August. There will be seats for eight or ten passengers. Per haps the longest aerial voyage on record was made by Holland, Mason and Green from London in 1836, in a baloon about sixty feet liih and fifty feet in diame ter, containing 85,000 cubic feet. It was furnished with provisions for a fort night, with instruments of great variety, avd clothincr in abundance. It crossed the channel, passed over many villages and towns in France, and, after many attempts; found a resting place in the Duchy of Nassau," five hundred miles Horn .London, the distance being ac complished in eighteen hours. It must be remembered that the movement of balloons depends entirely on the cur rents of uir, and is quite independent of any power that can be applied to them from within, and that the voyager has not the power to select any place for his landing. Sunstroke. ; Although sunstroke or coup de solid is rather a rare thing in this city, it is well that every one should know exactly what to do in case one should be struck. On this subject Dr. Woods, writing for LippincoWs Magazine payg. Sweating is nature's great refrigera- tivc measure, and to keep this up large. quantities of water should be drank, not too cold, but without stint quarts, if the thirei crave it. Keep sweating, and probably you are not in any imme diate danger, but when, on a July or August day, a man's head begins to throb and the suface grows dry and hot, while unwonted restlessness and lassi tude come on, as he values his life let him leave his work, however imperative, aud take at once a cold bath. There should in this disease be no waiting for the doctor.. The remedy is so simple, the death so imminent, that the good Samaritan passing by should save his brother. The good Samaritan must, however have a cool head to be useful. Not every man that falls unconscious on a hot day has sunstroke. There is for tunately one criterion so easily of ap plication that any one can use it. Go ut once to the fallen man, open bis shirt bosom, and lay the band upon his chest; if the skin is cool you may' rest assured that, whatever may be the trouble, it is not sunstroke. If, on the contrary, the skin bo burning hot, the case is certain ly sunstroke, and no time should be lost. The patient must be carried to the nearest pump or hydrant, stripped to his waist, and bucketful after buck etful of cold water be dashed over him until consciousness begins to return or the intense heat of the surface decidedly abates. Iu the last issue of the New York Ctty Directory there appears ft collec tion of queer names. There are 15 Frames, 3 Pickups, 1 Pickles, 1 Ship, 3 Crews, 3 Hearty, 5 Sick, 1 Tosick, 2 Well, 8 Weller and 1 Twogood. Then there are 3 Noahs and 1 Ark, 3 Furs, 1 Feather, 3 Pilgrims, 6 Stafla, 1 Car and 6 Drivers, 2 Mean and 2 Lovely, 5 Constables, with 1 Club, 2 Jury and 0 Foreman. There may also "be found I) Canarya and G Singers, 1 Dolls and 2 Shillings, 1 Bowels, 15 Houses, 1 Roof and 3 Leaks, 2 Fast, 1 Slow, 1 Sly, 1 Fatt, and 10 Loud, 2 Hens, 1 Chick and 2 Duck, 3 Clock and 3 Hands, 18 Chris tians, 2 Sinners and a Devi), 1 J3cow and 4 Sailers: A Maihe farmer has put on his land a sign reading: u No Gun iN aloud Hear." STATE ITEMS. Teii wheat and oat crop io the Ruth- erfordton section is turning out much better" than was t expected. j A weekly paper is soon to issue In Raleigh in the ostensible interest of the workingmen, with T. M. Argo as editor. -t The mica fever is unabated in Ruth-' erford " and other adjacent western counties. Several new mines nave been opened. A petition is circulating in Newbein asking Gov Caldwell to pardon Henry Jones, who is under sentence to be bang ed on the 8th prox. True plow and cotton chopper, the invention of J.B Underwood, of Fay ettevilie, is spoken of in high terms by intelligent farmers in Cumberland. The Hillsboro Recorder says there are guests for the summer in that ancient borough, from New Orleans, Alabama, Wilmington and Newbern, and many others are looked for. The Life Insurance Company, through their Agents, have paid the full amount of policy for five thousand dollars, which they were carrying upon the life oi the late John D. Flanner, of New Berne. The Raleigh Sentinel says : Mr Ben bow, of this city, will exhibit at the next Fair two hogs, whose gross weight will not exceed 25 pounds, and they are over two years of age. He says he ob tained them in Asia. The Sampson county Agricultural Society will hold its annual Fruit Ex hibition and Farmer's Festival at the Fair Grounds of the Society, on Friday, 15th of August. An address will be delivered by Rev B F Marable. The Wadesboro Herald says : On Sunday last a little girl, daughter of Mr Edward Fen ton, aged about eight years, fell oft a fence, breaking her arm and otherwise injuring her. She is doing very well, and will recover from the injury received. The Kinston Gazette says : There is a young pigeon at Mrs John Parrott's,, which is just beginning to fly, and which has voluntarily taken up its abode with an old cat and kittens, and on such friendly terms that if the pigeon makes any unusua.1 noise the cats will run to its relief. The Eccentricities of the great me tropolis are varied enough to be turned, daily, into a thrilling romance of the aveiage number of chapters and more than the average brilliancy of the Jinis. The other day, New York journals pub lished without comments, so accus tomed are Ueyto the article a story where a young girl, drugged with wine, was unconsciously to herself married to a man. It was not a pretty ending, be cause the young lady was indignant and declared that she was not married at all. It was a true story, however, and went tor what it was worth. Only Sunday last there was a second case of mock marriage this time of a ypung girl who bad been the recipient of much flirtation on the part of a certain "Ben edict." Being, on that day, in "Bene dict's" saloon, he keeps a; house of that character a bystander, (professing to be a clergyman, celebrated solemnly a contract of marriage between them. "Benedict" declares that marriage was all a joke. "Beatrice" affirms that it is genuine, and has the blessing ot the church upon.it. The young lady in this case does not run from the ceremo ny, but has already taken her place be -bind the counter and has begun to act the part ot a good wife to her "hus band." Here are two cases one of a girl married against her will, and one of a girl married in spite of herv "bus band's" will. Both come from New York city. Who can say, after this, that New York is not a metropolis and cosmopolitan, at that ? This is the way a worn-out editor an nounces his freedom from newspaper thraldom for one day : Fly away to the mountains, beneath shade and by fountains, all ye dust choked patriots fly ; there you may keep still, orate if you will, or sing ot the Fourth ot July. -If you orate, please State that the country is great a patent right Yankee notion ; talk of railroads and rings, and other big things, not omitting the fact that an ocean is all that keeps it from crossing over, and bossing all the nations that in darkness lie, who in ignorance are groping, with out the semblance of hoping lor a day like the Fourth of Jalyv If you are not a doodle, you will sing Yankee Doo dle" till your notes reach the clouds in the sky till the hills take the chills, as your fervid song thrills with the glory otne Fourth of July. You will sling 'in Adams and Hancock, Washington and Plymouth Rock, Yorktown and New Orleans, Paul Jones and his ship. But whatever you akip, you should not by any means omit to allude, in ' the most impassioned mood, to the grand old days of yore ; how that seventy-six, on account of political tricks, can't be gotten up in good style any more. The "sink or swim" trope is now the softest soft soap : " survive or perish" lis cant ; the Revolution is rant, and the only thing left is rad, nigger, and Grant. But with these three, and a national debt, it may possibly be, we'll be happy yet. This being the case, we drown out Bor row in the gush of our joy no paper 19 morrow. NEW ADYERTISEUENTS.
