WILMINGTON, N. C. Tuesday August 12th, 1873 . Cat this Out. So many persons are desirous of know ing whon the Courts in this district are held this, Fall, we publish a list for their convchience. Those interested had better preserve a copy. , Beunswick Fourth Monday in Au gust August 25th. Bladen Second Monday after the fourth Monday in August September 8th. Columbus Fourth Monday after the fourth Monday in August September 22d. IIobeson Sixth Monday after the fourth Mouday in August October 6th. New Hanover Eighth Monday after the fourth Monday in August October -20th. Duplin Twelfth Monday after the fourth Moriday in August November 17th. , Every Justice of the Peace is required by law to file a written statement with the Clerk of the Court, within the first three days of each term, containing a synopsis of every criminal case tried by him, how disposed of, etc. He is also required to deposit all papers connected with all State trials, with the Clerk, for the inspection of the Solicitor. The democrats claim that the amend ments have been adopted by an im mense majority, but we prefer to wait before we are willing to admit the ex travagant figures claimed. The Repub licans in the West seem to have voted for them, en masse y but the democrats still persist now in calling it a party triumph! We believe that those of our party, who voted for them will still re gret it bitterly, but we never recrimi nate and shall not complain now. We did all we could in the premises, though we knew it was not a party question, but one of policy-. Many go6d men of our party advocated them, much to our regret, though we do not criticise their motives for so doing. One democratic paper opposed them, thongh most of the press favored them. Meanwhile wc will patiently wait, fearing and dreading that our State will be thrown into repudiation by the democratic le gislature this winter, and that the State Senate will remain in its unjust appor tionment for at least ten years longer. For the Post. " Fiat Justicia Ruat Ccclum." Mr. Editor: In the Journal of to day is a communication about "The Late Regatta," in which "A. C. Shell" makes a feeble' attempt to explain about the "Retta" coming out victorious over the "Carolina" at the regatta on tho 6th inst. . It is a very common thing, Mr. Edi tor, for those who have been badly beaten in anything, and particularly in a yacht race, to begin making excuses for their failure, and although they do not convince any one, they usually, as in this instance keep up as much fussing as an old wet hen. We arc sorry for the old shell who seeins to be entirely too selfish, (as all such shells are) to ac cept with good grace the inevitable re sult of the contest which awarded the first prize to the beautiful and swift Retta. Everybody knows that those interested in a loosing boat are allowed the privilege of making any number of excuses; they don't help them any, it is true, and it don't hurt the fame of the winner, and all the talk about the Car olina being in bad order, and' having badly fitting sails, &c, when ve are also informed that she was just from under the hands of the car penter and painter, are absurdities tpo ridiculous to mislead any one. It won't do, friend Shelly and al though that " host of admirers " are so badly disgruntled, it is all the same. The race was a fair one,, tho Carolina never was in better trim and condition for racing than on lat Wednesday, and the ' 4 oppression and foreboding of com ing disaster, and the doubt of being able to get her up to her average standard of excellence by her captain," were but a natural consequence, after the little flirt of sailing had between, the yachts in question iust before the regular race. I am glad to see these friendly con tests between the yachts that adorn these waters, and when the beam of the balance is so evenly poised as between the Retta and the Carolina, boats built in our midst and by our own mechanics, the interest in them is greatly increased; and I look forward with great pleasure to tknext coming regatta, believing that the Retta will do as she did last week, and carry ofT the first prizewhile the Carolina will make desperate though unavailing exertions to prevent it.- e: WlLMINOTONIAS, EDITORIAL BUDGET. :, Jules Janin, the distinguished erateur, is seriously ill. , i - The reorganization of j the army in Catalonia is actively going on. j All Spanish officers refusing to take their posts in the army are to be tried by court-martial. In 1849 he assisted in making the State geolog5-survey, and in 1852 made a similar survey in North Caroli na with Professor Emmons, of Albany. The total freight on board the three steamers and iri the three sheds, and in the storehouses, $10,000. Two cars loaded with linseed oil, $7,000 ; Neal's rigging loft, $1,000 ; Stewart's stores of the steam packet company, $3,000; private property (of one hundred and fifty employes on the boats, $3,750. Total, $549,750. This leaves $50,250 for errors and omissions. A heavy storm, accompanied by wind, lightning, and unusually loud and sharp peals of thunder, occurred in the vicinity of Baltimore between 2 and 3 o'clock Sunday morning. The sloop Lucy, Captain Christy, of Brandywie, X)el., while lying at Lightstreet wharf, was struck by lightning, and topmas and lowermast shivered. Chatsworth' and Schroeder runs, in the northeastern section of the city, overflowed, and the foundations of several houses in course of erection were washed away. The cellars of a large number of buildings were flooded. , The aggregate loss is several thousand dollars. The stable of George Sheets was struck by light ning, and a valuable mare was I killed. The schooner Leonidas, Captain David Howard,, was also struck by lightning during the storm, and her mainmast shattered.
