The driver stopped his team some distance from the stream and walking ahead began to signal for the ferryman. The moles took fright and ran a short distance down ' the stream and plunged in. The driver at tempted to climb in the rear end of the conveyance and narrowly escaped with his life. The wagon hung upon an old tree and was re covered, but the mules were drowned. Snot and Wounded Ills Wife. A gentleman from Davie county informs us that Mr. Wm. Miller, a highly esteemed citizen of Mocks- ville, shot and wounded his wife with a shotgun one night during the holidays. She was some dis tance away, it appears, and the charge of shot took effect in her back her id janes, fortunately not proving of a serious nature. Mr. Miller it is said, was suffering from mental trouble, and when in this condition is hardly responsible for his actions, having- threatened the lives of his family upou several occasions. - - Asti.btro Him a fJ3,0O0 Fire. The town of Asheboro, N. C, Randolph county, had a first-class fire, which started Monday in Boy- ette & Richardson s drug store. Tho buildings burned were oyette & Richardson s drug store, J. Moflitt's store and the Argus newspaper pmce. mere was no insurance except on the drug store stock and on Moffitt s store house The others are a complete loss, ex cept Bnttaia and Sapp s. The li brary, part of the drug store stoca and part of the furniture ot tne no tel were saved by the most heroic efforts. The store of W. P. Wood & Co , the court-house, J. A. Black's resi dence, N.
