From, the Christian I telij'ncer. The fidlowiog illustration of the incr esting passage, which heads the article below, was suggested to the author some few year since, hy a venerable elder of Uie Dutch Church, now m hewn. - lie took from liia library an ancient Win, (the name and author are foremen.) and read with deepest interest, the tears atari- t ing from hi eye as he proceeded, some tiling aa follows -the thought only is re menhered Mercy a J truth kac met together- righteous es and peso bate biased each ullier - P$. Mercy, the . a i. ....I...,. ..r i n..... - ' uaruii miiiumc ui tur isicit, wiuiiirmr her plea before the Divine Majesty, I hire visited, she says, yonder distant plat et, the abode of millions of immortal being, and the scene presented to my view was distressing almost beyond de scription. Man commences .hie career J in wrrow, and ends u in despair. From ' hi birth he is subject to the most sever j bodily sufferings To-day he may bo in j apparent health, but he-morrow he is ruck- ! ed with pain and unusable agony. The ' r lie breathe is filud with pestilential v;mr, and the grate ia constantly swal- j lowing its thousand id unhappy victims. Mv heart bleeda at the rectfaU hut the ' tale tf wim i not half told. The very element are all armed to destroy him, sud in the vegetable and mineral king .duns, lurk the most baleful poisons, ; which at a hapless moment are inetillcd ' im his veins. Ilia life is as transient as (he morning dew; no sooner does he be gin to live than he begina to die. lie scarcely take a survey of the beautiful earth on which he is placed, before his eves are sealed in darkness, and hit no- ( ble form consigned to corruption. But j this is not at:; would it were. His ' me-iul duress is far more terrific it is j this which gives poignancy to his anguish 19 wtm .iiii.il itigii, mill uuwii till der a load which is too heavy ( bear; a fearfulness-seizes him; and that too in moments of seeming. jvfulne; and he gys, bending under it, to the gravp. . lie is ilie prey of remorse, winch i often so keen as to rob him of the few short mo- i menu of repose, which are allowed hnn to sustain the brief hour of his earthly j exiMence. And then comes despair, grim, haggard despair, to drink up his spirits; and he passes into eternity but j not to rest from his sufferings. . j This, amd M-rcy, is but a brief pic- J ttire of his sm ; and can 1 cease to weep over iir Lao 1 I'J tk upon this scene, and not piiy; c,t ( I pity and not relieve?" O that 1 might enter that world of mise ry. I. would bind up their wounds; I Wiiiild relieie their sorrows; I wbuhl sate their souls." And (), Eternal God, ia j not mercy thy darling attribute?. H.st j thou fi t proclaimed ihye!f, " Thfc Lirrd, the Lord (Jo'', iueriful and gracious?' 6p!ire; O spare," lime whom tlioii hast cratfd; and permit me to go and pnj cla in deliverance to tue Captive, and the opening of f e piiin doors to them that are bou-id." Mercy ceased; and Justice, sometimes naied Righieou-iies, for his strict adhe- j fence to the principles ofeiern.il rectitude, ! commenced. I know, said he, that the picture which Mercy has draw n is true, and that nun is wretchedbut is he not deservedly so? Mercy herself will not question this. ' Wijt Ire not created upright, and placed in the most favorable circumstances for maintaining his integrity? A thousand sources of happiness were opened before him. His psth was strewed with flowers, culled by the hand of bis Almighty Mak er. Good and evil life and death w ere set before him. Every thing was made to miuieler to his happiness, while the pureued the pith of obedience. Every motive was presented to induce him to choose the good, and refuse the evil. There was nothing wanting in the cup of his lewny u was filled up with every Jug feci eihmii necessary io cuuslilute a per- portion. And did he not break tLroegu all these kind and endearieg con sideration, aad angrawfullt and wicked ly dianbej bis M-ket? And have 4 bis whole race drank at the same polluted foaataia, and followed ia the steps of their great progenitor, and broken s righteous and oast holy law a law f ard on the principles el eternal rectitude; a law eat sternly calculated! to promote the highest happiness of the vaiverse; law which cannot be repealed, ami which cannot lower 'its sanctions, without destroying the Divine Government, and producing infinite mischief throughout the universe; Die' they, therefore, or Justice must. I must have sirkneea for their heaiih; I must have death for their life. Without shedding of blood there is no remission. Mercy, with a countenance beaming with pity and despair, again attempted to urge her plea; but Justice cast toward her a ttern and unrelenting look, a fixed and nnalterahle exprrssios) of determina tion. Upon this. Truth arose and said, ! have listened w ith deep emotion, to the tale of sorrow which Mtrcv has related, but I cannot yield to its influence at the expense of veracity and faithfulness. lias not a threat of recompense gone forth from the eternal throne? Has not the Holy (iotemor of the uni-ere said, Cursed is every one that continued! not in all things wriuea in the book of the law to do then?" And hat not man vio lated every precept of the law! Is it not written The soul that sinnrth it shall die; and hss not man sinned; mil is he not justly doomed to death? Hull the word go forth, and shall it not be fulfil led to' the U tter! Shall the threatening be made, and not be accomplished? Shall not a God of truth be true to Ins declara tion; or, shall he purpose and not make it good? If truth were expunged from the Divine councils, where would be the con fidence of holy beings in their Supreme Ktil.-r? I must, therefore, accord with Justice, and stand hy his eitie, until every word of what our glotiou Arbiter has threatened is fulfilled. Truth having concluded, a solemn si lence pervaded this august assemhly, as if something momentous was ahout to take place. The host of Heaven were gathering aronnd and gazing with intense interest upon the scene. At length the Son of God, the Prince of Peae-, aroe from hi seat, at the right ha i I of the Father, and as he roe the four and i ui ty elders fell down upon thrir laces; and the angels of light unite My seized their harps. The Son of U kI began with an unfaltering voice, expressive of the set tled purpose of his soul. I have heard, said he, the affecting appeal of Mercy in behalf of mm, and 1 know fult eli how to appreciate it, for 1 am not ignorant of the guilty and most unhappy race. With these hands man' admirable structure was reared, and from these lips he receiv es intellectual and I'tuu trtal nature. In his innocence my delights were with him. I walked with turn in the garden, and re joiced in the work of my hand. Hut he fell, and his glory departed. J ustice now seized him, and he was doomed to drag out a miseuhle existence and lie down in everlas'iog sorrow. Mcicy uept over him. hm Justice must be . c coiupltsiied. I have listened with min gled emotions to wVnt these divine allo cates have aid; ami t). righteous Fatlitr, said he, I kiiow th', i : i of the terms of peace and -, . I , , mi I aru now about to propov , .r i v ti lovedst ine before the foundation ! il.e world. And turning to Justice, he s .iJ mi me be this wrong;" in me lei Truth receive fulfilment to the utmost, a:id InMrcy go mid proclaim deliverance to me caji tives." O! it was an hour of intense and awful interest. The four and twenty el ders bowed themselves in deeper self abasement; and the angrU of Gud let fall their harps. Canst thou, O my Son, said i!ie eternal Father, endure the "fitrce ntss of the wrath of Alimghtv God? " Caust thou tread the wine pr s ilone?'! O how shall I give the up, my n-pent-ings are kindled together." The smug gle was past. For go, said he. And I will give thee the heathen for thine inhe ritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession." And God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Sou, that whosoever helieveth in him should not perish, but have ever lasting life." - Mrcy and truth now met together; righteousness and peace kissed each other.'! And while Mercy descended to preach salvation in the name of Jesus, the angels m round her san glory to God in the highestpeace on earth, and good will to men. V.
