J Sir: After some reearch, I kin enabled t reply to your inquiries respecting the Manuartlol Weight and Measures. In th first place it may le necessary to re mark, that the old Weights, mentioned in the UevUcd Statutes, umW the head of Weights asid Measures," were siloptcd by the State Legialattire more than a hun dred years ,, and are not to be regird ed now as the proper Mandards. Up on the adoption of the Federal Constitu tion, t'le p iwer to fix the ,StanUrd of Weights and Measures,' was surren dered by the State to Congress; and in fulfilment of iis duty , tin ier this power, the General Government has furnished to the States, within a few years past, a se ries of Weights and Measures, by which alt Standard Keepers hi the State are to be governed, from the lime that they shall be received by them respectively. A set 01" Weights and Measures 'made by, an J corresponding wiih these, has been sent to you. And aa the quantities of the Weights differ so materially from the old Standard of 1711. you very natu rally inquire fo the wetgUof ecca piece contained in the box. t The old Weigh s as seen in the Revis ed Statutes were. One Hundred founds. Half Iliiii lred, Quarter Hundred, Half Qmrler Hundred, Seven Founds, Four Found--, Two Pounds, One Pound, Half Found. Those you now have are a fol lows: One Found Troy weight; One do. Avoiidupois; 2 do. do; 3 do. do; 4 do. do; 5 d.t. dot 10 do. do; 20 do. do; 95 do. do; 50 (!o. do. The Troy pound is lighter than the oth er, and is only used in weighing precious met ils and medicines. Avoirdupois weight is the English and American standard lor all heavy articles. The quantity of each weight i marked on a paper in the bot tom of its place in the box, which was sent here under Ue act of Congress. Whether the same has been done in those procure! by the. State for the different counties, I am unable to ascertain. Of th? measure of extension there is the Yard Slick only. Of the Dry capacity of measures there are the Half Bushel ami Feck. Of Liquid. 1 Gallon, Half Gallon, Quart, Pint, Half Pint, and Gill. 'I he maker of these Standards recom mends great care in preserving them from rust, &c. which it is hoped wid be duly attended to by Standard Keepers. Very respectfully, your i bedient ser vant.
