"Weill Act With tha Demo

consult about '.the Senate contests
now pending in certain Western
States, have returned to Washing
ton. With their return comes the
report that.-th representatives of
the People's party in Congress will
act with tjje Democrats in the next
Congresf. (Already steps have been
taken to fetrengthen that friend
ship between the Democrats anel
the Populists in the House and
Senate-. Senator Kyle, the recog
nizee! leader ef the Populists
in Congress, wa asked to-day
if he inteneleel' to vote with the
Democrats in the reorganization
of the Senate. He said ho was
not prepareil to' commit himself ir
revocably, on that subject. ;
"Hut," said he, "since I hayo
been a member of the Senate I have
votcel nine times out of every ten
with the Democrats. There is
much in common between ojur peo
pie and the Democrats. They are
lighting for economy in the public
expenditures; so are we. They are
battling for a reduction of taxa
tion; so are we. Wo may dilfer
somewhat on money questions, but
rn general principles there is more
in the Democratic party to attract
us than there i to be found in tTie
Republican party. During my en
tire service in the Senate I have
never received a suggestion from a
Democratic Senator as to how t
should vote1 on the various ques
tions that-havebeen presented. I
have followed my own inclination
and voted in accordance with my
convictions, with the result that in
almost every instance I have'fountl
myself acting with the Democrats!
I am not making any pledges for
the future, but will continue to
follow the dictates of conscience in
passing upon all public questions
that come before the Senate."

LOSES HIS MIND.
A Prisoner Goes Crazy and Tries to
Kill a Cellmate.
At the recent, terra of Swain
county court a young man named
Edwards was tried and convicted
of manslaughter and sentenced to
the penitentiary for a ten years
term. Kdwards was brought to
Ashcvilla and placed in Iluncom
he's jail. ; He had Maj. W. II. Ma

gentleman as his attorney.
Two or three eh-rvs ago Edward
began to act strangely, butnoth-

later on attempted to kill a cell,'
mate, Mark Hayes, making a fu
rious attr.ek on him with an empty
battle. So violent did Edwards
become that Hayes h id to be re
moved to another cell. It is
thought that Fdwards has lost his
mind by brooding over the crime
and his sentence. ,
Edward.-' mother was here yes

cognized by him, but he seems to
know no one else, and takes no no

BY K. II. SIMPSOX.
I was stitching, stitching, stitching,
One beautiful afternoon,
My thoughts llewjlike myjoeedle,
Or a shuttle within a loom.
I compared my life to atreadmilt,
Ever moving the sameold way;
The same tedious stitchTng and stitch'g
From morn until closii'of day.
Then I thought f the toiling millions
All striving their 'jread to gain,
Till the picture grew so vivid r
That I bowed my1; head in shame;
Ashamed to think I shoukl murriier
lieraus I hatl plenty of work.
While scores of God's good creatures
Are living in squalor and dirt.
We wish for the wealth of a magnate .
To drive patient toil from the door.
Yet then we would not be contented,
And stretch out our hands for more;
And so it goes on tile world qjver,
Not one eiuite content or at ease.
Wiiat sort of a world would we live in
If everyone lived as they please.
So I think it is just as it should be;
Feel thankful for blessings that come;
Speak well of your frienus and your
neighbor,
Do just by everyone.
When we feel unhappy and murmur,
Wishing things might be the reverse,
Consider your home and surroundings,
And think that it might, be much
worse.
