Demo crats of the second congressional district today nominated by accla mation John Scott, of Bath, as a candidate for the vacancy caused by the 'death of Nelson Dingley. Mr. Scott delivered an address in dorsing Bryan and the Chicago platform. Resolutions were adopted indors ing the last national and state De mocratic platforms, and setting forth that these principles were triumphed over by "McKinleyism," which has given the country "brutal political bossism, relentless and grasping trustism, blatant Eaganiem, criminal Algorism and rotten beefism in a word, unadul terated, unreasoning and detestable modern Republicanism and bold and un-American imperialism.' Quarrel Results in Suicide. Mannington, W. Va., May 13. A man and woman registering as L. M. McMillan and B. D. Holland, of Mobile, Ala., arrived here today. Accompanied by a driver they drove to Joetown, the woman get ting out there, the two having quar reled all the way. McMillan then drove to Line, Wetzel county, where, before the driver could pre vent, he shot himself dead. Before expiring McMillan murmured ; "Mobile I Oh, what an awful trip!" Hats Off in This Chmch. Out in Kansas City three months ago a church-goer wrote to a news paper that he would pay n more pew rent at his House of worship unless some guarantee should be givemhim that his view of the min ister should be unobstructed. Out of this miisive grew an anti-hat campaign, with the result that on Sunday last the feminine members of the church capitulated and re moved their new spring headgear at the opening of the service. A eon of Ireland was painting a fence. His face wore a troubled look. Suddenly smile-shot across it; and dipping the brush into the paintpot, he began to paint faster and faster. Why are you painting so fast?" asked a bystander. "You're in a rush all of a sudden to finish the job." 'Sure, an' thot's all right," was the reply. "I haven't much paint left, an' its finishing the job Oi'm afther before it's all gone." 55 S3 Bush Beans GUILFORD COLLEGE. The Closing Exercises Closed One of the Most Prosper ous Years in the His tory of the Col lege. Guilford College, May 13 The work at Guilford College for the year 1898 and 1S99 was closed by the exercises of commencement day. The weather was most favorable, and the attendance the; largest in the history of the insti tution, the capacity of Memorial Hall being tested for the first time. On the 28th of April the exercises of commencement week began with the close and interesting oratorical contest by six young men from the Websterian Literary Society. Mr. Thomas . Hinton was the successful speaker, who the year before won the Improvement medal in the same socie ty.! The Improvement medal this year was won by Mr. Charles Davis. On the following evening, the 29th, six young men from the Henry Clay Society spoke for the prize, and made it bard for the judges to decide who should be the victor. Mr. Oliver Par ker, of High Point, was the successful speaker. The Improvement medal wad won by Mr. Walter Hollowell, of Perquimans county. On the evening of May 6th a public lecture was given by Prof. Ormond Stone, director ol the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Vir gin! On Sunday, the 7th, a very able and helpful sermon was preached by Rev. J. W. Stagg, of Charlotte, who re mained at the college and preached a second sermon at the regular Sabbath evening meeting. His service wab felt to be most helpful. The Guilford College scholarship to the best student finishing the prepara tory department was awarded to Miss Murial L. Lowe, of Randolph county. The Haverford College annual schol arship of $300 to the best scholar of the young men of the graduating class was won by Mr. William W. Allen, Jr., of Greensboro, whose oration on "Ten nyson's Influence on Religious Thoughts" elicited special praise. The Bryn Mawr scholarship of $400 awarded annually to the best scholar of the young women of the graduating class was awarded to Miss Elizabeth White,-of Texas. It was stated by the president that of the eight young women who in as many years have been elected to the Bryn Mawr scholarship, six during their senior year have received first grade on all studies, and that Miss Coffin is one of these six. Mr. John W. Lewis in his oration on "Tne Virginia Colony," paid a glow ing tribute to Virginia for the leading part taken by her statesmen in the great forward movement for liberty in the American colonies. Miss Coffin's oration on "England's Colonial Policy" showed a wide and accurate knowledge of the expansion of England. The baccalaureate address made by Ruf us M. Jones, of Haverford College, was, without doubt, one of the most helpful and edifying addresses ever made at Guilford. It was a powerful presentation of the fundamental prin ciples of Christianity, and a clear set ting forth of the appeal which the Gospel makes not only to reason but to the whole man. The address will remain in the minds of all who heard it as the outflowing of a mind and heart aglow with love to God and to man. The exercises closed about 1 o'clock and at 3 a baseball game between the alumni'and the college was much en joyed on the beautiful lawn by a large company oi spectators, ine college proved too much for the alumni. The alumnae-alumni reception was held in Memorial Hall at 9 p. m., and was much enjoyed by all who were present. Speeches were made by Presi dent Hobbs, Prof. J. T. Davis, MrF Mary M. Hobbs, Prof. R. N. Wilson and Rev. James R.Jones ; also by rep resentatives from about eight classes. Thus closed one of the most prosper ous years the institution has ever ex perienced. The great improvement in the way of buildings, equipments, dairy farm, and the recent introduc tion of an abundant supply of water, all point to a useful future for Guilford College. Driving Out the Jews. London, May 13. The Russian government has decided upon ex ceptional meaeures against the Jews, doubtless owing to the in tense feeling against them prevail ing in many parts of Russia at the present time. TheTfirst anti-Jew-ish measure was promulgated yes terday; under which the stay of all, even foreign Jews, is prohibited in StJ Petersburg. No exemption will be made even in the case of French Jews. There have been serious out breaks against the Jews at Nicola ieff in connection with the Easter festivities of the Greek Church. The Jews there number 30,000 out of a total- population of 100,000. The rioters who were mostly labor ers, numbered 5,000. They wrecked hundreds of Jewish houses and shops, desecrated Jewish graves and killed and injured a large number. About 400 offthe rioters were arrested after several furious conflicts with Cossacks, several of whom, it is reported, were stoned or beaten to death, with heavily weighted slings with which the rioters attacked the police.
