THE TOBACCO PL.ANT. C. I. GREEJ, Editor and Proprietor. TUESDAY. AUGUST 2. 1881. THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY". The reason why the people ot North Carolina have stood bo long and sa steadily b j th Democratic party is beoause the principles of that party have wropgkt ont the liberty of the citizen and secured kim ic all his 'rights of person and property. The poorest and humblest person in the land possesses all the privileges and mmanities of the rich and powerful. Tinder our equal and just constitu tion, made so by the Democratie party, every one is entitled to personal liberty in its fullest sense, unless he commit erime; and to have, own and In i - i i - i i : , xijuj nu uia iuuu3ii, tcai, wain ui capital can wake for kim. "What iore ean any one wish, unless he weald be shielded from thepenallics ol tcronq-doing, or that ho ttould bare those more iadustrious than himself to divide the fruits of their toil with him ? .Nihilism certainly can have no abiding place in staid old North Car olina; and aijtil there shall be formtd duuio twuiUJliluuu .oaiu.ll till ui uxiy goverioiacnt, the Democratic party xaftt of necessity be sustained by the eople. It is the enly party, since the-day when the good people of North Caro lina banded themselves together to defeat lawlessness and corruption, that has done anything for the good of the people. It has restored the credit cf tke State which the Republican party had well nigh destroyed, and while it could not reclaim the school fund whieh had been stolen by the Radi cals, still it has established schools for the education ef the poor children of the State, and the money to appro priated has been honestly expended. It has never taken frosa the people any right howsoever small, and has always maintained tke doctrine that a majority had the right to say what is best for all. It is easy enough for croakers to find fault, but unless some party can show by its works that it is sore worthy te be trusted the people will stand by the "old reliable" De mocracy. PRO. ANTI. AND FERRELL. ' If we thought it possible that any nan or men would allow his or their Toto for county officers on Thursday next to bo controlled by the question f prohibition or anti-prohibition, we would earnestly suggest that efficiency and honesty are among the jewels that the officials of Durham ought to wear. There are doubtless many anti-prohibitionists who wenld stake sober, steady officials, while some prohibi tionists might perehance be found asleep on post. Mr. Terrell cannot make promomen ine test, ior me vitafa f TwK a m rtiinfv Trill an v i) f when Mr. Ferrell, as Clerk of Wake County Court, failed to pay over the money he kad eolleeted by virtae of his office, and let his bendsmen suffer, that suck a man must not handle the money of widows, orphans and iticor children. He must not stop the wheels of trade for the reasoii that aJKctions must be delayed until his bondsmen are sued to pay for u Clerk's default. There must be no risks'taken that trill lessen the little sum set sacredly , apart to edueate our children. And certainly we want no kid gloves and , ladies' slippers taxed against us, until after we shall at least have a jail if no court house. Tub other day we copied a para graph giving the sizes of the largest ehurch edifices in England, and their capacity. For instance, St. Peter's, Rome, holds 54,ooo persons; Milan Cathedral, 37,ooo; St. Paul's, Lonoa, 35 ooo; St Sophia's, Constantinople, 23,ooo; Notre Dame, Paris, 21,oco; ' Pisa Cathedral, 13,coo; St. Mark's, Tienna, 7,ooo; Spurgeon's Tabernacle, 7,ooo. Other grand edifices like Co logne Cathedral, and a dozen others are not mentioned.. In contrast let ; us turn to the famous theatres of an tiquity. . The celebrated Dionysiac Theatre at Athens seated 25,ooo per sons. But this was much smaller than th ere at Roman theatre, built y Pompey, after a model he imd sen at Mitylene, It would accom modate 4o.o"o cvectators. It was opened m -55 B. C. It was a grand occasion. There were dramatic rep resentations, gymnastic contests, g!ad- itorial fights, and fights of wild Leasts, "Dive nunurea Airican lions were : killed, and eighteen elephants were brought into the arena, most of which ' fell before Gretulian huntsmen.'' . The modern theatres are very small com pared with the vast ancient struc tures. Tf7. Star. ! Roscoe Cohkong, recommended for the vacant place en the Supreme tench by Blaine and MacVeagh, strikes the New York Post as in the nature of an ironical cnggestion. That was Mr. Lincoln's idea when he shelved primate Chase in the same closet for political meditation. Phil Times, Ind. I The conservative tendency of the popular vote in Switzerland received conlrmation cn the 2d day of July,, when a law passed by the Great Coun cil for tka election of judges by uni versal suffrage was vetoed by a large majority tf tko tlooWrs. WHAT IS HIS POLITICS. ' While Mr. J. 3. Ferrell'e card wai written almost exclusive upon the idea that a majority of the people are aati--prohibitionists, yet it is apparent to the careful observer that he aims his thrusts at. the Democratic party. "Will Democrat?, while reading tbisgroand hsa jargon, observe in what a silly net they are expeeted to be caught? Not one word of abuge falls from the lips of this "ginger-cake, cream-candj can didate'; agaiDst the Republican party, I but he; quietly and heartily accepts i the nomination of the colored conven-1 t; nj u - i t.on, and with a knowing mnk says, j ' I m with you, boys, keep dark. . I Mr.-'lFerrell ha3 never yet answered j anything The Plant lias said of him, bopano if ttaa TrnrT, ttnu i,0 may say privately it is untrue, it is due the people that he should come out publicly and meet the proof which is ready for him if he wishes to put in ! a denial. Jjfet Lim ; remember' that Democrats will vote their sentiments whether Tirol, ihit.inn rr nnti.MrnViihi- t- n ij ,1 . -I tion, and then require their officers to r bs both efficient and Imnesf. Thekk is a striking similarity in the methods' of dishonest officials, whether of ibo General Government or of States a fact that he can plainly illustrate by comparing some recent exposures in the Philadelphia Press ol peculations by State cflicials in Pennsylvania with the frauds ;in the office jof the custodian of the Public Treasury, recently brought to light in Wtishiogton. The revelations in both cubes indicate that it is the little ills of life that -mate up most of its un pleasantness andtho smaller offenses that make up the great burden of crime, ss it is ia comparativt ly trifling things that thieving officials fisd their greatest opportunities. Wash. Post, JJem. ! Moke than 24o,ooo immigrants landed at the port of New York dur ing the first- half of this year. At that rate, more than 4.3o,ooo of thee cru saders will have reached us by the end of December. Such an influx is with out precedent. Its nearest approach was last year, when the number reached 327,371. The only ether years when the limit of 3oo,ooo was passed were 1852 and 1854. The four years from 1875 to 1878, inela sive, brought bat 282, 7oo all com bined. N. Y. Sun. About the biggest one day's job in railrcadiDg ever known was executed yesterday, when the traek of the Chi cago & St. Louis & New Orleans Rail way, 55o miles long, was changed in about twelve hours. It toek 3,oco mn to do the work, and the cost is said to have been about $3oo,oo. ' BE TEMPEUATE. Under this hwading we find an article in the MHrfreesboro Enquirer that expresses our own sentiments so fully that we copy it entire. It Says: "One of the features of the present campaign on the liquor bill that is to claim the atteation of the people of North Carolina at the polls on Thurs day next, is the ultra view that many tako In fi;ct, it ha3 been carried to too gi'iijt i.n exttiit by both siiTes. I eup'e should be moderate and tepi-J ptrate in ail things a3 wsll as in whis- key ''ormking. Abuse is not argu ment, and buth sides 'should remem ber this. This is a free country and people have a right to vote and act as they ploa;-f. It is no special indica tion of their depravity, or want of gentility it. matters not on wlncjj. side of this measure they stand. Many support this bill Iroin 'conscientious motives. They think honestly that it is the best -thing for the State and people. On tho other hand, many thing to'' the contrary from the same motives and promptings. Tey think the bill objectionable, and upon it, they cast their votes, for its defeat. Both sides have their views-and both are perhaps equally honest in their opinions. It ia not therefore for either side to be ultra and to heap abuse upon the other for xlifiering with them in this matter. f Such mode of campaigning drags the : prohibition question down below tho: cesspool of cross roads politics1! They are unbecoming, deleterious and should be no longer indulged. The advocates of prohibition can gain nothing by waging a personal cam pariga,'; or, in plain, words, in becoming intemperate themselves by carrying the fight to an extreme. And neither can the ; anti proLiibitionists gaia re cruits for their side by assailing those who spouse JiibatioD, the preach ers, especially, or by resorting to inde cent? methods, or appeals to preju dices. Such action wiU .simply cause hard and unkind feeling and make no votes for either side. ' The Legislature acted wisely, as nearly all aree, in leaving the matter witli tht: people. We all claim to, be willing to abide the decision of a ma jority. This is the yard stick of pub lic opinion. It ia the measure of township and co.untry. On Thursday at xt, this yard 6tick will be applieel at the polls to measure tho sentiment of the people of North Carolina on this subject. Befcro that time, which is now only for a few days, both sides are expected to do all in their power by fair, honest means, to get ont their full strength on the day of the elec tion. In their zeal, however, "both should practice the temperance they advocate. They should remember, kow also,- that it has been said: Vox Popidi, Vox De? The voice of the people is, the voice of God. They should also remember that in our State and oountry 'The majority rulea' If this bill is adopted, therefore, by a majority of the people of North Car olina, it should be the law of North Carolina. ; On the other hand, if it ia defeated, those who advocate its pres- sage should accept with equal grace the decision of the people. Let both sides be temperate, keep eeol if pos sible this kot wtatkar ant await tke reinli . CRASD LODGB I. O. G. T. j We have been Requested to publish tke following, by Mr. V. Uallard, G. W.
