'1 T Vo!ume 86—Number 26—Bryson City, North Carotina — Thursday, March 20, 1969 Around Town We would tike to express our special thanks to the fine citizens of Swain County that have caiied the TIMES this week with information pertaining to wrecks, fires, jweaking and enterings, and the like. We here at the TIMES are only two people and cant be everywhere, we appreciate any information that might iead to a news article. Thank you! * * * We have received a special request from Forest Ranger Oris Hughes pertaining to the excessive number of forest and grass fires in the county during the past week. Mr. Hughes asked us to point out that you must have a permit before starting or causing to be started any fire within 500 feet of any woodland. Permits are simpie to obtain but a very vital part of the forest fires protection service. Bear this in mind if you have a "garden spot" to bum off. I am sure it will not only save fthe forest rangers a great deai of time but will also prevent the fire department from making unnecessary fire runs. * * * We had a very serious accident in Jackson County this week involving some teenagers from Bryson City. We might point out that seatbelts were not used. Statistics prove that less serious accidents resuit when driver and passengers are "buckled up for safety. " * * * We have a note on our desk that the Swain County Athletic Association will meet in the Swain County Courthouse at ' f: 3(rtbmorrow (Friday) night. * * * The State Highway Patroi reports twd accidents in Swain County this week. White making 5 contacts, three were dunged with speeding. There were no drunk driving charges, no pedestrian violations, and no nd non hazardous violations. There were two other hdkardous moving vioiations reported. The Department patrolled 3,186 miles in the county from March 10 through March 16.
