A GRANDFATHER WHO
can't stay retired because
he "likes people too well" has
found his life's happiest work
on return to his great-grand
father's native highlands.
In fact, the enthusiasm of
Mr. and Mrs. J.L Parker—
hosts of the Town House Motel
in Highlands, N. C. since Jan
uary 1967—has proved so
infectious that their two
married daughters have recent
ly joined them.
Counting the Parkers' grand
children, it was five generations
ago that Mr. Parker's great
grandfather turned his back on
the cold winters of the Western
N. C. mountains and headed
southward. According to family
legend, he packed all his be
longings into a barrel and rolled
it all the way to Seminole County
in South Georgia. There he
fell in love with the warm
lowlands, and settled down.

It WM not until his grandson,
J. L Parker, tried unsuccess
fully to retire from a highly
successful hardware business
in Donaldsvilie, Georgia—and
again from a prospering cattle
ranch and trading post in the
outlying area—that the return
journey was made.
It was a roundabout trip.
Making an honest effort to
"realty retire this time", Mr.
and Mrs. Farker travelled ex
tensively. The fame of the
hll color season brought them
to Highlands, N. C. in the autumn
of 1966. And the mountains
claimed their own. The Parkers
fell in love with Highlands.
Learning that the Town House
Motel was for sale, they bought
it. Although neither had had
experience in this type of busi
ness, they felt it was an ideal
way to combine their love of
the mountains and of people.
"I've never enjoyed anything
so muchinmylife,"Mr. Parker
declared. "It's just like one
big family."
Up to now, the only hostelry
in the immediate area to stay
open all year, the Town House
has become home for numbers
of people in all seasons. Skiers
fill the motel every weekend
during the winter. Highlands
home-owners make the Town
House their headquarters at ail
times of the year—while
readying their homes for
summertime living, closing
them in the fall, tending to
necessary off-season check
ups.
Summer vacation business is
so heavy that the Parkers wel
comed Hie offer of their older
daughter, Mrs. Norma German,
to join them last April. Their
son, Elton L. Parker, an
electrical engineer, is living
in Charlotte, N. C., where he is
southeastern manager ofWes
tinghouse Textile.
Just last month, the return
of the Parker clan became
complete, when the younger
daughter and her husband, Mr.
and Mrs. John Cummings, Jr.,
and their daughters, Carol and
Ann, moved to Highlands. Carol
will be going to vocational
school in Atlanta, but Ann is
now a studentat Highlands High.
Mrs. Cummings is with Cobb
Realty, and her husband is with
Reeves Hardware.
And why have they all so
happily abandoned the lowlands
for the highlands? Even in-law
John Cummings, descendant of
a long line of lowlanders (the
first sellters of Seminole
County, Ga.) joins intheanswer
that would make great-great
great- grandfather Parker shiv
er. They love the excitement
of the cold snowy highland
winters!
