"CONFERENCE GAMES Varsity Boys - Richard Ensiey Varsity Giris - Milton Barden J.V. Boys - Harold Stephens ' " ' ' *.. ' ! r From The Coach's Desk By Milt Barden Hello again. The players have been selected for the Ail Smoky Mountain Conference Footbai! team. The choices this year were most difficult with the abundance of taient throughout the conference; these choices were especially hard when electing the offensive backfieid since each coach wanted to piace his own "prize stock" in the iine-up. Unfortunateiy some of the better players were elected in position other than ones they played. Perhaps you recall our all conference defensive halfback, Ronnie Ledford, in last year's elected team. Rather than create any ill feeling: this year 1 would like to list in this column very simply the all-conference selections for 1969. These are listed under the schools they represent. Andrews: none Cherokee: Russell Tooni, Rick Long. Franklin: Joe Sanders, Jimmy Gamer, Gerald Fouts, Keith Corbin. Hayesville: None Murphy: Arnold Crisp, Ford Mavartck The car that heid the price iine ia the beat aetier in '70. Why? Becauae Maverick )a aim pie to aervice, aimpie to drive, aimpie to own. AIRPORT ROAD Terry Stiles, Jeff Jackson, Dennis McCiure, Boyd Smith, Mitch Myers. Robbinsviiie: Ronnie Waidroup, Dale Walsh. Syiva: Bimbo Queen, Gary Cowan, Keith Clark, Arlin Middleton. Swain: BBi Adams, Larry Beck, Jim Bigwitch, Alvin Gerding, Danny Muse, Nat Watson. I am personally very proud of our boys, every one of them had a fine year at Swain High. One can't heip noticing the absence of many other often heard names from our team and other schools. Perhaps some of the best piayeis didn't make the eMte list, for example Jimmy Nelson, the real One back from Hayesviile one of the best. The oniy way to expiain how such an ommission is made is the method and number of votes cast. The selections were made by the conference head coaches. This may not be the best method in poking the winners, but....Of the eight conference schools only seven Were represented, vote splits, ties and whatever-at any rate it is ganeraBy feit that the best boys were elected. 1 ne most uutamuumg lineman in the conference is Boyd Smith, Center from Murphy. Jim Bigwltch, offensive and defensive lineman and erstwhile halfback from Swain was the runner-up for this honor. The most outstanding back in the conference & Jeff Jackson, from Murphy with Larry Beck from Swain as the runner up. Bob Coivin, coach of the State 1-A Champs of Robbinsviile was selected Coach of the year. Honorable mention selections are the boys who were nominated by their coaches but were not selected on the "first" ail-conference teams. They are listed as the "first" team. Andrews: Dickie Blaylock, Danny Dennis, Steve Guffey, Bill Moore, Liles, David Brooks. Cherokee: David French, Jerry Oocumma, John Grant, George Smith, Ernie Lossiah, Buford Smith, Eddie Crowe. Franklin: Gamer, Young, Moore, Norton. Hayesviile: Jimmy Nelson. Murphy: Mike Dockery, Tommy Fisher, Bruce Coward. Robbinsviile: Snyder, Charlie George, Dickie Odom, Davis, Sawyer, Mark Manuel, Tony Odom. Sylva: Charles Howell, Dennis Proffitt, Reece. Swain: Alva Crowe, Paul Sooter, Jim Colville.
