Letters To The Editor I an writing to you about my phono. It hn bom dead off and m for rix months now. We cant call out without getting this, “Sorry, the number you hgve called is not in a working number, please consult your directory or ask for Directory Service.” Sir, we need good telephone services and we also want good phone service when we have to pay high prices for the phone. We need a telephone office here in Bryson City to pay our phone bills to. My bills I have had to pay over and over and now, sir, I have to pay it again or it will be taken out the 16. If we don't get better phone service than we have now, then we need a phone company who will see we have better service, ff we have to pay for a phone, that isn't in working order part of the time and have to pay for a private phone that isn’t private half the time. This is the worst shape our phone service has ever been in. You report it and they call you and say they believe your phone is fixed now, but it isn’t. All we can dial and get is a recording. Somewhere, we have to pay for a phone even though we don’t get half the use out of it, that we need to. If you need to call the doctor or ambulance, or fire department in a hurry, you can’t, because the phone is dead or you get “I am sorry, this isn’t a working number.” Sir, we need better service and we need a telephone office here in Bryson City, that can keep our phones in order, and keep our telephone bills straightened out. I can’t keep paying over and over after I pay my phone bill up in full. We need a lady in Bryson like to used to have here. Mrs. Sam J. Franklin Dear Sir: Your editorial in The Smoky Mountain Times dated November 12, 1970 was very interesting and very true to form. I would like to add to the list of complaints, our experience with this telephone situation. We have tried for eight (8) years to have telephone service since 1962, and here we are in 1970, still without a telephone. We are property owners here in Bryson City since 1962 and located in the Nantahala District, specifically, in the Needmore Community. Without going into details from 1962 I would like to quote from a letter dated December 2, 1969 written by Mr. John E. ■ ML" ? no nm limit Art*! REPLACEMENT GUARANTEE! N C CLAMPITT HARDWARE Smith, Dist. Manager, Sylva who stated that proepects were that we could expect telephone service, in our location, during the later part of the first (1st) quarto* of 1970. We contacted the office, in Sylva, which resulted in another letter from the company, dated April 14,1970, which stated that the project in this area would be completed September 90, 1970, this letter was signed by Mr. Paul Wooten, Commercial Manager, Western District. Our location here makes it very essential that we have a telephone. Our home was broken into while we were away, and last winter we were stuck in the snow, no way of communicating to any one for help, as the nearest telephone is two (2) miles away. Our triple A service was useless to us because of lack of communication. I would like to know what kind of laws does this state have that allow a Public Utility such as The Western Carolina Telephone Company to operate. We have made application for a private line but from what I have heard it could be just a dream. From what I have heard, many here have a nine (9) party line, which to me is unjust and disgraceful. In closing I do hope something will be done to put this outfit up to date, and to go forward not backward. Sincerely, Hobart L. Collins Box 491 Bryson Qty.N.C. Dear Sir: Under the direction of Mr. T. L. Woodard, Superintendent of Schools, Swain County has assumed a leadership role in specific educational activities. One of these activities is the exciting team teaching program at Whittier Elementary School. Attached to this letter is a brochure describing the program. Mrs. Mabel Rogers, Mr. Stan diford Gorin, and Mr. Alan Lenk have been working extremely hard for two school years. Their numerous contributions to the children of Swain County has been very meaningful. Hopefully, you will find that their activities are news worthy. You may wish to contact the principal, Mr. Wade Gass, or the team leader, Mrs. Mabel Rogers for more information or to arrange for some photographs. These teachers are providing vital services to the children in Swain County. A special article or feature concerning their activities would serve two purposes: (1) It would focus attention on your school system, and (2) give participants a “pat on the back” for a job well done. Many thanks for your interest and concern in this matter. If I can be of further assistance, please feel free to call me. Sincerely yours, J.
