Bryson City Club Women
Attend State Convention
The sixty-ninth annual
State convention of North
Carolina Federation of
Woman’s Clubs held at
Wilmington, was attended by
the Bryson City Woman’s Club
president, Mrs. H.H.H. Clark,
District one president, Mrs.
Henry J. Truett, and Mrs. W.D.
Huddleston, delegate. Mrs.
Paul Keller, State president,
announced Thursday at noon
eight hundred nine had
registered at the Timme Plaza
Inn for the convention. A
district award was presented
to Mrs. Truett for early
rendering of District One dues.
The annual award is a silver
plate. District One consists of
fourteen clubs. The State
Federation of Woman’s Clubs
gave Mr. Bill Doud, plant
manager of Ball Corporation at
Asheville, a certificate of
appreciation for activitis to
improve the environment. The
Ball Corporation was cited for
its glass container recycling
program. Mrs. Clark stated that
she hopes the Bryson City area
and other towns will work a
program to collect all clear
glass for the Ball Corporation,
to help control litter. The
Ball Corporation will pay a
penny a pound.
A most educational
program and picture was given
on conservation, leaving one
wondering if we are “beyond
the point of no return”. The ESO
work was fully explained and
anyone wishing to continue
their education at home or in
school gains much knowledge
and credits for the reading and
reports.
A most enjoyable event of
the convention was special
music by the Boys Home Choir,
Lake Waccamaw. They won the
heart and ears of the members.
The tour of Wilmington
attracted four bus loads of dub

members who enjoyed a tour of
Greenfield Park, the University
of N.C. at Wilmington, Airlie
Gardens, Historic District, and
many points of interest.
Governor and Mrs. Robert
Scott were guests Thursday
night for the Hawaiian Luau
Banquet . Everyone was
dressed in the gay Hawaiian
type clothes. The luau was
followed by a trip to the USS
North Carolina Battleship.
The convention was full
from Monday through Friday,
starting at 8:00 and closing at
11:30 pjn. There was never a
dull moment. It was interesting,
educational, and real fun.
Everyone looks forward to the
next one to be held in
Greensboro next spring.

Swain
High
The Junior-Senior Prom
was held Saturday night, April
24, in the little gym. Music was
provided by Mind, Boy and
Soul, a band from Waynesville,
N.C.
Miss Pamn Randolph, a
senior at Swain High was
crowned Prom Queen by
Principal Clifford Frizzel.
The Junior Class chose
“Aquarius” for the theme and
followed through with
astrological decorations.
Members of the Junior and
Senior classes would like to
thank the following people for
chaperoning the event: Mr. and
Mrs. Leroy Sweeny, Mr. Bill ,
Mr. and Mrs. John Cope, Mr.
and Mrs. Roy Styles, Mr. and
Mrs. Bill Dills and Mrs. Martha

Eighty members of the
Senior Class left for
Washington, D.C. Wednesday
morning at 9 am.
Traveling by bus, the students
will arrive in Washington at
approximately 9:30n
Wednesday night. The following
three days will be spent
sightseeing and having fun.
Washington National
Cathedral, Lincoln Memorial,
Washington Monument,
Arlington National Cemetery,
the Capitol Building,
Washington Zoo and the
Smithsonian Institute are just a
few of the places the Seniors
will be visiting.
An extra-added attraction
of this year’s trip will be a
baseball game between the
Washington Senators and the
Chicago White Sax.
Chaperones for the trip will
be Mrs. Louise Sandlin, Mr. Bill
Harrell, Mrs. Phyllis Claxton,
and Mr. Harold Stevens.

Weds Brian Garrett
The wedding of Miss
Dorothy Geraldine Wright and
Brian Garrett took place
Saturday April 17, in the First
Baptist Church here. The Rev.
Willie Newman, pastor,
conducted the 7 p.m. ceremony.
Mrs. James Gribble was
organist.
The bride is the daughter of
Ms. Gerald G. Wright of Bryson
City and the late Mr. Wright.
The bridegroom is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Bert H. Garrett of
Euclid, Ohio.
The bride, unescorted, was
given in marriage by her
mother. She wore a gown of
white shantique with empire
waist, featuring a high neckline
and cap sleeves edged with
Venice lace. A watteau train
was attached at die shoulers
and had bands of the same lace,
her headpiece was a waist
length mantilla edged with
Venice lace and she carried a
cascade bouquet of Eucharis
lilies and pink sweetheart roses.
Miss Lynn Wright, sifter of
the bride, was maid of honor.
She wore a floor-length gown of
salmon pink silk linen, with
short puffed sleeves and A-line
skirt featuring a watteau back.
Her headpiece was a matching
dior bow and she carried a
single long-stem pink rose.
Bridesmaids were Mrs.
Paul A. Garrett, sister-in-law of
the groom, of Avon Lake, Ohio;
Mrs. Patricia W. Game of
Gastonia, cousin of the bride;
and Mrs. Robert E. Thomas of
Cullowhee. They were dressed
like the honor attendant.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Cochran celebrated their 52nd
anniversary at their home on
Sunday, April 18. They were
entertained at a dinner given by
their daughters, Mrs. Maxine
Earls, of New York and other
relatives. Te Cochrans were
married April 19, 1919.
Mrs. Ethel Phillips and
granddaughter, Teresa
Woodard, spent last weekend
visiting with her brothers and
families, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar
Clark,Mr.Otis Clark,and Mr.
T.A. Clark, all of Franklin.
Mrs. Leona Medford spent
part of last week visiting with
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Medford and
family of Hendersonville, and
also with her nephew, Rev. Paul

the Alarka Baptist Church was
taken on an outing and a picnic
by their teacher, Mr. Dick
Barker, last Sunday.

groups were there for the

and children from Gastonia
were weekend guests of Mr. and
Mrs. P.M. Brnedle; they also
attended the Mt. Zion
homecoming.
Mr. and Mrs. P.M. Brendle
have gone to Gastonia to sepnd
the week with the Moody’s.

served as best man. Ushers
included Patrick S. Garrett and
Paul A. Garrett, brothers of the
bridegroom; Robert E.
Thomas of Cullowhee, cousin of
the bride; and Ronald Kemp of
Raleigh.

Mrs. Garrett is a graduate
of Western Carolina University
with a degree in Early
Childhood Education
Mr .Garrett attended North
Carolina State University and is
employed as a mechanical
engineer with Continental
Telephone Laboratories in
Hickory, N.C.
Following a short wedding

Hickory, N.C
